Title: Broadband Service for server
Post by: USSEnterprise on November 03, 2005, 03:16:03 pm
I am trying to set up a server for an after school activity and want to use our own physical server. It would be used for a website and blog. I have Cablevision and Verizon available in my area. We are trying to keep it cheap. Anyone have any ideas?

Get the fastest upload speed you can  - I think Cablevision wins on that count.

Not school related I take it?

You know how some high schools have a chess club, or d&d club, or clubs like that.... maybe schools should have a LAN party club :)

Good Idea ;)

Its for a political group, which the school most likely cannot endorse.

So it appears to be a conservative group ;)

You just need to check your TOS.  It's very possible that setting up a server is not something your cable company will allow without an 'upgrade' of your account.

For a small school group, the load would be so light that they are unlikely to notice if you used the regular dyndns type setup.

Of course, they may object to a 4th grade neonazi forum.   ;)

And if the ISP blocks port 80, there are ways around that with redirecting services.

What you would do then is just set up your ISP webspace page to the domain, and put one page up there with a 1 second meta refresh to point to your machine on a port like 100.

Just the opposite. We're a bunch of Bush hating hippies in the middle of a highly conservative town

Yeah! Go Team!

(Although, I'm not a Hippie myself. Wore a shirt and tie throughout High School, likes to wear a suits without occasion, was never really good at hacky-sack, can't stand Patchouli, and hate the Grateful Dead, Fish and jam bands in general)

If that's the case, I'd ask the principal.  He may offer to host your site, or ask you to run the school's in exchange for web space!

Depends.  Someone told me it looked like a muffin, which personally, I just thought they were hitting on me.  Yeah I know...it's a cross I have to bear, being this dead-sexy ;)

If you look REAL closely, you can read the text of the award I won, and that color of yellow seems to be a popular skin tone on the simpsons
