I am wondering (perhaps it really makes no difference whatsoever) what free email service I should use for the email address on my resume? Excite, Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail...?? I have normally used the email address through my ISP, but this time I will be relocating so I won't have this address forever. My career is in IT, so is there a provider that says "this guy at least can pick the best email service" or perhaps one to avoid that says the very opposite? I have been tweeking my resume and this thought popped into my head. Like I said, it may not matter, but I'd like to hear some opinions.

I'd use g-mail as that has the better reputation.
That and there's tons of invites for the ---smurfing--- thing around here ;)

Sorry, you can't avoid that with any free service.
I say gmail because of the features. The conversations feature will keep replies grouped with the message you sent to the company.

Just realised, there's this http://www.pobox.com/
It's a pretty good forwarding service. This way, even if your e-mail changes, thew PObox email stays the same. (do I sound like an infomercial yet ::) )
It's not free but it's not earth--shatteringly expensive either.

everybody who's anybody knows hotmail is crap and yahoo is second rate.
FYI I used gmail on my resume and I ended up with the job, allthough I don't think my e-mail address was a qualifying thing but hey you never know....

Having your-name-domain.something always looks good especially for techi IT jobs.
The problem is, is the domain availiable? If your name is common, most likely not.
You don't have have to use your name but avoid something that can be confuse with a p0rn site like BigBooties.xXx BigJohnson.xXx. Unless you are selling large boots or you're last name is johnson and you are 6 1/2' tall.

I bought an address (paul(a)murphy.net) from NetIdentity (http://www.netidentity.com/F3PDOV2K) years ago. If you've got a common last name they should have a domain for you (ie, you can buy an address like dave@thethompsons.com from them). I think it's $25 a year for registering and POP/SMTP/Webmail service for a year but I think it's well worth it.

I would deffinatley agree with those saying use your name as your email adress.

Seriously though, look up your last name. There may be a service there that will sell you an email forward.
www.netidentity.com will probably have that. That's how I have a myfirstname@mylastname.com. It's only $5 a year but looked good on resumes. I got a few comments on it, which means it was somerthing to remember me by during the review process. I've been in a couple of review processes. Most people don't remember your name to face after the short interview. Someone will say "I liked the guy that said this...".
So, you definately want a nice looking email address on your resume. Which do you think would get me more respect sirpoonga@yahoo.com or Chuck.Norris@gmail.com (or Chuck@Norris.com).

Yahoo, Msn, and every other company does the same thing, problem is, they dont TELL you..
And you dont get "spam emails" from anything from gmail, in fact, the only spam ive gotten is from people i know..

I get about 1-2 spam a day that get's through gmail's spam filter. mostly because the email is in unicode with foreign characters. I wish they had the option (i emailed them the idea) that you will only accept a certain langauge.
I do not like the label idea instead of folders. But I love the conversations idea and therefore will not use another free service unless it has a simular feature. It's just nice ot have replies (conversations) goruped together automatically.

Exactly. I get hundereds of resumes from email addresses like 'doomslayer@darkness.net' or 'beer-swiller@partyrock.com.' Hint to applicants: this is not impressive. They make for nice way to rule out the people with no common sense really fast.
And with my handle I get filtered form alot of sites. Heh, when this forum started the auto-censor needed ot be adjusted because of me. I was SirThingyga for awhile. But no, that's not what my handle is about! Heh, i can now say it's because I like the poonga sunglasses ;)

I think it depends on the actual adress, yours isn't that bad. Much better than hungman@hooters.com

I surely would try not to, but please don't tell me you're assuming anything on the OUTSIDE of an envelope that a person has ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL OVER once it's been given over to the USPS could ONLY be the fault of the applicant named on the inside of that envelope.
Anyone who's ever gotten a mangled or bent item in the mail that SPECIFICALLY says "do not mangle" or "do not bend" raise your hand.

I also got a nicely folded legal-sized manilla envelope in my mailbox. When unfolded, it clearly stated "DO NOT FOLD". The photographs inside were quite nice to view with a big fat crease in many of them ::)
I also worked at UPS. I KNOW that "Fragile" is shorthand to UPS employees for "try not to break this on the off chance that they actually paid to insure this package against anything". The "pull a few boxes from the bottom until the majority of 'em fall onto the belt" was a common practice.

We had a guy who could unload a truck faster than 2 guys could sort it. He worked another full-time job while waiting for a driving position to open up at UPS. He routinely brought his lunchbox into the trailers with him and ate while we caught up.
I did similar things when hiring. If the application wasn't complete, they'd have to have extended work history listed, such as a minimum of 2 years at their last job. Also, if I was asked for a pen after handing out an application, I'd inform them that they'd do better to take it home and fill it out, since it appeared that they weren't prepared to submit an application. If told that they wanted to fill it out right now or didn't have time, I'd tell them I didn't have a pen. I never had anyone NOT grasp what I was telling them by that time, even though I'd often have a pen right in my shirt pocket.
Appearances DO often give an impression that won't get them a second chance, but I've had people turn out to be the best employees I hired even though they didn't appear to be someone I should give a second thought.
I do get your point, I just wanted to point out that there is a possibility for outward appearances of something out of their control to be misleading. Allow them to give you a more detailed example of their desire to unimpress you ;)
