I was just wondering what games people play (that require the rotary function) with the LS30 rotary type sticks?
-
Hey, just today I began getting Druin's interface working again...
I made up a list, but I don't know how complete it is.
I tested all the games and they work well with the LS-30's.
Bermuda Triangle
Caliber 50
Downtown
Exterminator (slightly different control but same idea)
Forgotten Worlds (Used Optical rotary joystick)
Gondomania
Guerilla War
Heavy Barrel
Ikari 3
Ikari Warriors
Midnight Resistance
Search and Rescue
Time Soldiers
Tank III
Top Gunner Bootleg (It's a Jackal bootleg which uses LS-30 for the gun turret - Jackal didn't allow that)
Touchdown Fever (optical rotary)
Victory Road
Xybots (Slightly different control style, but same idea)
There was an old thread about it:

By the way, in case you didn't know, a while back a Escher made some special Mame drivers for many of the LS-30 games. http://cryptnet1.net/mame. I made a special build of Mame and it is really awesome! (It maps the controls to a button press instead of the spinner control. Mame ordinarily maps the rotary to an analog spinner control which causes some problems with the mechanical rotary joysticks - you can never get the settings quite right.)
Some of the games that didn't seem to be fixed by it include ikari3, caliber 50, topgunner bootleg, downtown, search and rescue...

I have a question about the joysticks. My LS-30 loosens up really easily, and I don't know how to tighten it. Instead of making a nice 'click' sound when you rotate the joystick, it makes 'dings' and it rattles. It's a lot nicer when it clicks, but I don't know how to tighten it. It only happens on one of my LS-30's and not the other one. Does anyone know what I'm talking about and know how to fix it?

I did a search on SNK and LS30 and didn't get that thread. Thanks for the great information.
Can you use the same driver info for v0.63?
I'll take a look at me LS-30's to see if I can help you find the solution to your problem. Mine are new, so I haven't experienced the problem your having. Hell, I haven't even experienced using them yet :)

I don't know if the driver works with versions .63... I tried compiling Mame63 without putting the changes in, but the compile failed so I gave up. I'll try again soon.
About searching the message board... When you search these message boards, the search defaults to the last 7 days. I set it to the last 500 days or something when I did my search.

Could I have a copy of your modified MAME? I currently use an old build of MAME with Escher's code. <-- it's fine when I'm turning slowly HOWEVER, when I want to do a 180 degree turn (4 clicks) it doesn't do it when I turn my rotary dial fast.
-
I read somewhere about that problem using Druin's interface (I have the problem also), that a quick turn can't be made like that. The clicks are so fast that either the motherboard or the operating system fails to notice the break in between and merges the clicks into a single keypress.
I'm using Mame version .59 with Escher's changes.
I tried building it with Mame63, but it didn't work. It would take some redoing to build it into the new version.
Let me know here if you still want me to put up version .59 somewhere, although I suspect that's the one you already have.
-
Yeah I'm using Escher's .59 build as well.
It's actually not a problem with Druin's interface. I tested it out with "NOTEPAD" by mapping the left and right dial to "A" and "B"
If I make 4 clicks really fast I see "AAAA".
It's the way MAME was hacked to translate the interface. :(.
oh well... can't ever get that same arcade SNK feel....

Huh, in notepad if I rotate the stick to the left in notepad, then I don't get all the clicks. I wonder what is causing that?

I updated Escher's old files to compile with Mame .63. You can get the new files here:
http://www26.brinkster.com/jstookey/downloads/
I would put the compiled version up there, but my free web host won't let me put a file that large.

I have copied JerryJanis's page with his permission and have copied it to my web space. I have also provided a link to the compiled mame.exe on this page. You can get to it from a link on my mame page at http://mame.hower.us (http://mame.hower.us)
