Title: CPO Over 1/8" Plexi
Post by: coasternuts on October 28, 2005, 10:14:03 pm
The ingredients of my control panel sandwhich are as follows starting from the bottom:

3/4" plywood
joystick dustwashers
1/8" plexi
control panel overlay artwork

I was planning on doing as Oscar's control panel. (http://www.oscarcontrols.com/sinistar)

I am trying not to have any screws/bolts showing, but I am worried that the flathead screws holding down the plexi will "accidently" or inadvertantly rip/tear/create air bubbles in my CPO.

Here is shots of the countersunk flathead in the plexi.

What do you think?

Can you re-explain your method. I am struggling with this explanation to offer any constructive help.

*Edit. Ok got you now...

mmm, why not just put the dust washers between the joystick base and the plywood?

Dunno his reason, but my reasoning for not doing that was because a .5" deep hole 1 1/8" in diameter looked retarded there.

I never understood why Kelsey used plexi instead of 1/4" plywood.

In any case, is there some kind of filler you can put in the slots of the screws?  My personal experience is that you will be able to tell where the screws are, but it's not a big issue.

Filler is what I was thinking but it would have to be silicone I guess.

I prefer to have the overlay over the plexi because the textured material feels more authentic than plexi.  (early 80's authentic as opposed to whenever "plexi over art" showed up.)

The 4 screws that hold down the "artwork/plexi" layer to the plywood would be the only 4 potentially noticeable.  All other mounts will be under the plexi.  If that makes any sense.

I'm still convinced Kelsey's way is the cleanest solution and I was just concerned about the 4 potentially visible/wiggly :P screws.
