Stop thinking about spending $3000 on a freakin television. What a gigondo waste of money.

Yeah if you have 3K go with a DLP projector and a big freakin screen. It a good way to spend 3K
-
Actually, I was thinking more like buy a standard 35" TV and use the rest of the money on something better. Something that does not involve being on the couch.

Get a new one-two year old TV. You'll save a lot of money. Not good to be on the bleeding edge.

The biggest TV in my house is 27", and there aren't that many TVs in my house. There are as more vector monitors than TVs in my house.
-
Ooof! I'm about to make my third mortgage payment. If I had $3000 to waste I'd definetly make a principal-only payment or set it aside for when the roof caves in.
edit: actually, I don't have to worry about the roof caving in, thats where my condo $s are there for
-
MMM, that would knock a student loan out permanently for me.
-
I just wish I had $30 to waste
-
I have $3 I could probably waste.
-
I don't watch a lot of TV but when I do, I like to enjoy the hell out of the experience
One of the TV's in my house is a Panasonic PT-52DL52 52" DLP Technology HDTV (http://refurbelectronics.com/papt52didili.html). When we move into the new house we are having built we are building a home theatre with a 92" screen w/ a HD DLP Projector.
Xbox games are really nice on a HD TV. Can't wait to see the X360 on the Panasonic and the Home Theatre.

Go to Dunkin Donuts.
-
I don't even know what a $3000 TV would look like. I've owned a lot of cars that I paid less than that for. My TV is 27", I think it was about $200.

Screw that! There is a Dunkin Donuts every 40 yards here.
I'm going to go to the Chinese place down the street and get some hot + sour soup.
-
I have a 60" (I think), DLP. Awesome picture. Spent less than 3K on that last year. It's in my basement. Just bought a 37" LCD for my family room, it's fantastic. Even makes non-HD broadcasts look nice.
Have to buy HD. It's awesome.
If I was a bachelor again, I'd put 3 TV's in my main room. You can play games and keep an eye on the game, have news on 24/7, etc.

All while on the couch.
-
Today's special, 3000 tacos at $1 each.
A 50" HDTV can be purchased nowadays for around $1,200. the Christmas sales will see prices likely under $1,000.
-
You can get a decent mountain bike for $300.
-
chad, being on the couch rules, stop trying to debate this.
-
You don't get to frost boobies without going out to find the boobies to frost.
-
eh yeah i guess, when u play in a band boobies come to you though
-
Forget these guys!
Spend $1500 on a nice rear-projection bigscreen, and the rest on a LCD projector (I'm not a DLP fan because of the rainbow effect on lower-end models)
Best of both world's my friend! I use the 42" for regular tv, and the projector for movies. ;D

$2875 = Most expensive vehicle I've ever owned.
I'd buy a HDTV rear projector for under $1500, a small TV for the kitchen ~$100 and spend the rest on tools. that way you can build your own tables for the living room etc.
Or find a nice projector for ~$1500 and do this:
-
If you're not particular about your video, I found an old 3 tube projector on Ebay for like $200, bought a manual screen for $50, and have a 80" diagonal picture in my living room. I feed it S-Vid from either the DVD or a Tivo, and viola - instant large screen. Its not a Faroudja line doubler setup, but its fine for the kids to watch disney movies on. The late nite movies get more... interesting also.
Of course, you need decent tech skills to align the guns, and you need to get used to sitting under an 80 pound box hanging from your ceiling (this is when you find out how much your friends trust your carpentry skills - by where they sit).
Noone wants the old PJ's now that new ones weigh 3 lbs and can be set up by an ameoba.
-
That's true. I picked up my Sony "coffee table projector" for free (my brother has it now).
-
I like my Panasonic 50 LCD Projection TV. Best money ever spent! (I like to watch a lot of TV) Don't get a CRT projection. Too heavy and they can get burn-in.

Are you on your couch when playing? Or are you out in a club?
See?

I LOVE my Samsung 61" DLP set.
-
I bought a house a few months ago and the last thing on my mind was what TV to buy.
-
I'm finishing my basement and trying to decide what my budget will be to put in a wide screen HD tv....
-
You can fit multiple pins and/or cabs in that space instead.

I assumed that's what a finished basement was for. Right?
-
My basement isn't anywhere near finished and it's still for pins and vids.
-
I've had a 50" tv for the past 11 years. I look at other peoples 27" or 35" tv's when I visit and think "What a puny tv." Once you go big screen, you can't go back. The regular tv's look wimpy.
Get a nice HDTV rear projection for around $2000. You have to watch out for these new projection tv's that display on a screen, the replacement bulbs (which die after about a year) can really cost you.
If you really want to go the DLP projector route, get a regular 35" tv for standard viewing, and only use the big one for movies and such.
-
When I want my 27" screen to look bigger, I sit closer. It works.

Well, having a puny TV suits me fine when I'm not watching it, which is most of the time.
Pretty much, I watch football and pro wrestling. Occasionally I break in some World's Strongest Man or Reno 911, but not often.
-
I don't watch much "tv" - only Battlestar Galactica and SG1. I watch movies, and that's about it. With the price of movie theaters today, I skip it - it's cheaper to buy the DVD, since I would be going with my wife anyways. Then, I can watch it when I want without some moron's head in my way.
Plus, my sound system is waaaay better than the theaters...
-
When I say TV, I include DVDs and such.
-
Rooms in the basement:
- Arcade (space for 7 vids, 2 pins, 1 air hockey table)
- Bar/gaming area for D&D/cards/drunken debauchery, which is open to . . .
- TV room. It's not a home theater, alas, but it will have a wide screen TV. We don't watch very often, but Battle Star Galactica on a big old screen is a must!
- Exercise room/dojo with mats on the floor for jujitsu
- full bath
- guest room
Gonna be finished just before Christmas! :)

Unless those are all for Smurfs, your basement is bigger than mine.

dude i wanna chill with saint!

Seriously! That basement sounds spectacular!
Wish I had a basement. :(

That sounds like the size of the basement at the home where I picked up my Super Breakout cab.

Yeah but what you lack in a basement you make up for with that great slacker-able job!!!

Which is then repealed on the basis of his double digit yearly salary.

Nobody works in a school because of the great pay, that's for sure.

u make more than me =p

I see a common thread among the posters who don't make much cash.
-
I make enough to live comfortably and buy myself a new toy now & then. I have a job that doesn't require me to work very hard. Life is good.

All jokes aside.

Saint, I had no idea you were into Jujitsu! What style do practice?

whoa. cool. I think I can come close... Arcade/bar room that opens to the spa tub (good combination, booze, water and vids!). That room for now opens to a tv/console room (the kid's living room) with a couple of couches, wall unit and tv, then a large hallway with a slot machine and ms pac cocktail, then a wine room, a full bath, 1 bedroom, a home office, workshop/tool room and finally a workout room.
I like the sounds of yours where the bar is separate from the vids. I'd have to kick the kids out of their sitting room to do that, and then they'd just take over the theatre room upstairs, so forget that. :sigh: maybe when 2 or three of them move out I can get some more space! (One of the upstairs bedrooms is going to be a model train room...like one of those crazy old guys with trains...tunnels and all that stuff.)

Close, heh, you just zoomed right past me! I had to give up my train room *sniff! sniff!* to have the dojo. It was a tough call :)
It's not as grand as it may sound, the rooms are a bit compact. The arcade room is 13' by 15' for instance...

What about a pool table???
sounds like you have enough room that if I ever get into trouble with mrs. missioncontrol for spending too much time on here I can just hang out over there..........
;D

Ok guuys, what are my options for tvs in general? i know you guys are taking DLP LCD And all that jazz but break the tvs into categories for me so i can do some research
thanks
-
the choices used to be simple either B&W or color
now you hace to take a dictionary to understand what all that HDD DPL LCD and whatever other initials they have made up.......

Umm.... There are several belts in the art, I'm not sure the name has anything to do with my belt color. White-Yellow-Green-Blue-Purple-Brown-Black

You need to measure from the TV spot to where the couch is and go from there.
I would get either a Samsung/Panasonic DLP TV or if you have alot of other Sony A/V equipment I would get a Sony.
