Title: LEDs for coindoors and TB...WTB...
Post by: Sinner on October 26, 2005, 09:28:10 am
Does anyone in the GTA know where to buy LEDs and sockets, for lighting coindoors, and trackballs???

I have my TB lit with a single super bright red LED, but it directional, and when you look at it from a lower angle it doesn't appear to be illuminated.

I was hoping to swap it out for a bulb of sorts, that I can put in a socket (I'll need to buy those too)...I would want them for my TB and for coindoors...

I was thinking Canadian Tire, or some sort of automotive store, that might have the 12 volt ones, but I haven't seen any through my online search...

Any ideas??

One advice on lighting the coin doors.

Do not use LEDs.  There don't look as good as normal bulbs.
I tried the LEDs because I had a bunch around and thought it would
last longer than a normal bulb so I wouldn't have to change it ever again.
But the LEDs light is too focus.  It doesn't make it glow.

It may depend on the type of door, but I get a better glow with a red 4 led cluster than an incandescent bulb.  I get holders here:

and leds here:

Thanks for the info...was this 1 LED or is it the bulb style that has 5 or so in it??

The one LED was too focus.
The cluster types were better but was too bright.

I ended up just using those small 12v MAG light bulbs I got from local Radio Shack.
Electrical tape is a good thing.

I'm surprised someone hasn't come up with some kind of cheap snap on plastic light diffuser of some kind for these super bright LEDs.  My trackball is lit with just one green superbright LED pointing straight up and it's so bright it projects a small green blob on the ceiling.  I grew to like it though (holding your hand over it, you feel like a wizard), so I never changed it.  :)

I recall Active (or Action) Electronics on Queen St. near Young in Toronto as being an great source for these type of items.  I haven't been there in about ten years, but I suspect that they are still there.  They carried new and used items.

I hope this helps.
