Title: Beginner question - coin mechs
Post by: Jixer on October 24, 2005, 05:36:48 pm
Hi!

I recently bought a used cabinet that I plan to convert to a MAME cabinet.  From the looks on the stickers still on the cabinet, it appears the cabinet is a 1998-built Atari Radical Bikers.  I bought the cabinet with no monitor and no boards, but it did have a bunch of wires all over the place and a coin door.  After taking out these 2 large security bars over the coin door and coin box, I removed the coin door.

Can anyone tell me what I need to make this coin door work again?
I see a bunch of wires and a connector, but have no idea where to wire these to and how to power it up.

From what I read, it appears I need 2 coin mechs.  Can I use any coin mech, like those from Happ or Imonex?  Also, is it easy to wire up the mechs and coin door?  Since I'm going to build a MAME cab,
these wires will somehow connect to something like an I-PAC,
correct?  What about for power for power/ground?

Sorry, but I'm totally new to this and after reading some of the other posts, I'm still confused.

Thanks!

You should be able to grab any modular mech from ebay.

Take out the light bulbs, I believe they will be 12v.
See the switches at the bottom of door_back2.JPG.  The token/quartar will trip that.  hook those switches to coin input on keyboard interface.

You can just create a cardboard chute instead of buying a mech then.

That's a late model Coin Controls door with a mounting plate for a dollar bill acceptor.

Ideally you should get some Coin Controls coin chutes to put in this door as they have that extension (shovel) on the top corner of the coin gate to better guide coins into the chute and not fall out the side.

He's missing the piece that locks the mechs into place.

Also looks like it's bent all out of shape inside.

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, I agree the blue color is ugly.  I plan to paint it black again.

What's more important to me know is how to get the coin door working again.  So, from the responses, it looks like just getting 2 coin mechs isn't enough, since I'm missing the parts to lock the mechs, correct?

Do these missing pieces usually come attached with the coin mechs, or do I have to specially order these parts?  Are Coin Control coin chutes easy to come by these days?  I always see Happ and Imonex mechs on ebay.

Also, since I had no idea that the parts were bent in the first place, if I did manage to straighten them out (whatever that means), do I need any more parts besides the coin chutes/mechs?

As for the existing wiring that's already there, I only really need the wires that connect the bottom switches and another for the lights, correct?  I could get rid of the other wires/connector, right?
