would a pentium 3 800mhz,pc with 128 meg ram and a 128 mb graphics card be ok for mortal kombat??
-
sure
-
mm strange seems to run slow on my machine then,, is mame 0.80 ok for this or is this the reason its
-
MAME32? Windows command line? DOS?
First, there are a few things to do that really impact performance.
If any of the following are turned on, turn them off:
waitvsync
triplebuffer
and maybe even turn off the "stretch".
Also let the game run for a couple minutes and see if the FPS eventually climbs up to 60/60 (or whatever it should be).
If you're still not hitting the target, start going to older versions of MAME (but you will STILL need those options I mentioned above to be turned off!)

hi thanx for the reply ,ok ill try that, but how do i check what the FPS is??.....
-
F11
Also make sure frameskip is on AUTO.
When you press F11, info will show up in the top right.
There will be a set of numbers. Like 60/60 (or for MK I think it might be 53/53)
The first number is your frame rate. The second number is the game's original preferred frame rate. If you see something like 40/53 then you know you're not getting the full performance out of the game (you're only getting 40 frames per second instead of 53).

When I first came across Mame, the current version was .56 and I had a 733 mHz Celeron, 64 MB RAM, and onboard video, and it played MK just fine in Mame32 (v.56) with default options. It did OK on MK2 as well, though MK3 was pretty slow.
-
well ive tried a few older versions of mame gone back as far as 0.70 command line version of mame, and my frame rates in mortal kombat are around35/53 which seems poor, done all the above and cant seem to get it any better?? help

Try v.55

and a 128 mb graphics card be ok for mortal kombat??
Your graphics card as little to do with MAME performance. 128MB is total overkill.
Here's a tip for you: on lower-end systems it has been noted on some midway hardware that frameskip actually adds quite a bit of overhead to game performance (calculating the frameskip per frame adds more overhead than it elliminates by skipping frames!). Mortal Kombat is a good example of this. Turn auto-frameskip OFF and you'll see your framerate climb quite a bit.
I've played MAME in the 0.5X era on a Celeron 566 overclocked to 850MHz (essentially a Coppermine PIII-850 with 1/4 cache) and managed the full 53fps without any dramas. Ensure you have vsync and auto-frame-skip turned off. You should easily get full frames with that sort of setup.

Hiya. I have a P3 800 with 256Mb and I actually get 60/53 on Mortal Kombat with AdvanceMAME 0.90. That's running too fast, yes, in order to avoid having to adjust the sync controls on my monitor. And yes, the top and bottom of the screen are slightly clipped!
But the point is, that PC should be just about up to the job if set up right.
-
Well. I have a MAME pc with an AMD Duron 800mhz, 640mb ram, 64mb video card, and MK1 and MK2 only run at ~30fps in Mame32 0.95. Auto frameskip is off, vsync is off. I should mention too that the sound stutters, like instead hearing "Sub-Zero", you hear "Sub-sub-zero". Any ideas?
Most any other game that I would like to play run perfectly, except the other MK games and the NBA JAM games.

would a pentium 3 800mhz,pc with 128 meg ram and a 128 mb graphics card be ok for mortal kombat??
My first cab (now sold off) had those exact specs: P3 800MHz, 128mb RAM. It had only a 4mb video card, not 128mb. And I can confirm, it played Mortal Kombat just fine.
I ran v0.77 of advmame (dos version) with advmenu as the front end.
-
I just tried v0.77 of AdvanceMAME, with the version of AdvanceMENU that was released the same day, and I still get the same results. If everybody with similar rigs had success, there must be something wrong here. Is there a past version of Mame32 that will play MK2 without a hitch? It runs flawless on my P4 3ghz home pc, so my first guess would be that the processor is the problem. I mean even the character select screen runs at 33 fps on my mame pc.
I can turn directdraw and / or direct3d on and off and the fps doesnt change. Disabling sound only adds 1-2 fps. Throttle, enforce aspect ratio, none of these seem to change the fps at all. Unclicking stretch using hardware actually decreases the fps to 27 fps.
Other games like X-men run at 87/60fps.

Since this is the Mortal Kombat technical support thread, I'll ask my question here ;D:
The resolution of Mortal Kombat is something weird like 399x253 x 53hz right? Can I program an Nvidia card to run those settings? 399 seems like quite a strange number to be running at.
Any tips on getting a sharp, clean, un-blurry/stretched image out of MK on Mala/mame .82 running on a Nvidia GF4 TI-4200? I know how to add custom resoltions to my card like Street Fighters odd one of 384x224, but I haven't done MKs because I don't know if the card can do it.
-
Nevermind, I double-checked and only the mameinfo reports 399x253. Mame .82 however reports it at 400x254, which actually I had already added to my nv4 dll file. I told Mala to add a -r 400x254 -refresh 70 -nohws line to my mkla1 rom and I was good to go. I fatalitied Liu Kang and Sonya, knocked Johnny Cage into the pit, but was defeated by Kano in a close match. All played at perfect sharp resolutions.

Try something between v.55 and v.61.

Wow, in v.55 it runs at 100%. Thanks Recoil! Is tthere any reason i shouldnt abandon mame32 v.95 and start using mame .55 in my Gameex frontend?
