Ok guys. I've been toying with the idea of getting a tri/multisync arcade monitor for gaming and flicker free movie watching. After a lot of deliberations, it seems getting a Polo Star monitor is my safest bet, as I can buy it in my territory (Spain) and get direct warranty through Hantarex's offices here.
But after some asked questions to Hantarex themselves and a good deal of searching about these monitors here in the forums, I still have some doubts about their convenience of operation for a Windows XP (MAME32) general setup. So far this is the info I got, together with my remaining unanswered doubts:
- The Polo Star is an analog monitor with 3 Hsync modes: ~15.7, 25 and 31/35/38 KHz operation. It is automatic, so it will autoswitch between them, but I've been reading contradictory opinions regarding the advisability of doing "on the fly" Hsync changes (commonly referred as "resolution" changes). I've read you have to cut some resistor on the chassis for this thing to work properly. Anyone able to give me a better explanation and/or advice?
- The 31/35/38 KHz question. I've been told the monitor won't autoswitch between these modes (I'm interested in 31 & 38 KHz, for 640x480 and 800x600 both @ 60 Hz), but instead you have to adjust a potentiometer for this to work. So if I set Windows desktop at 800x600, which is 38 KHz, and given that BIOS, bootup screens and 640x480 mode are 31 KHz, what's gonna happen at mode switch? Will it blow up? ??? Or will I just get a rolling image until I adjust the corresponding pot? Any difference when doing this from 31 to 38 KHz, then from 38 back to 31 KHz?
