I know this is probably an aggressive first post, but I was watching the biker build-off on the discovery channel the other day and I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like if a similar challenge existed here as well (perhaps as a child board). I think that it could act as a catalyst to inspire original ideas via a friendly competition.
For those who have not seen the show it is basically just two builders given 30 days (I believe) to build a motorcyle. The two motorcycles are then voted on by people at a show.
I just thought I'd throw it out there to see what people thought. I have been reading the threads on this site for probably 6 months and there are a lot of creative and talented people out there. I would love to see what could come of such challenges.
Forgive me if this has already been proposed in the past, but it is nothing that I have seen in my time viewing the posts, and I didn't even bother trying to search for 'challenge' or 'competition' for obvious reasons.

If you really wanted to, you could probably build a complete cab from scratch in a day or two.

The challenge wouldn't be so much in the time it would take to make the cab, but the cab itself. The time limit (whatever it would be) would just be a way to establish a completion/voting date.

kinda like the micro cab competition a couple of years ago :)

This is a very intriguing idea... probably only so, to me because I'm about to head into my first build.
I see the obstacle being that participants are going to be mostly limited to people building their first cab, or pros building for other people, which creates a huge disparity in skill level.
Unfortunately, unlike the biker build off shows, the cost of the cabinet isn't likely to be covered by the producing television show. And we amateurs can't afford to eat the cost as part of an advertising budget.
I know that a lot of this would be like car shows, where part of the score would be the elegance of the wiring etc... things that nobody but builders are going to appreciate; although these elements would be missing, you might get some participants for a virtual cab build. Even that would turn into a contest of skill at 3d rendering though.
I'm intrigued and just throwing out ideas and obstacles that might have to be considered to make this a success.

It doesn't necessarily always have to be cabs either. Challenges can vary from cabs to artwork to game room accessories. The possibilities are limitless. I would imagine that skill levels would be matched up as well. I guess there could be a nubie build-off, but that would probably be better held off until a few veterans faced off. Not that people haven't made good cabinets at their first go-around, people usually come up with better work on future cabs.
Obviously money is the big issue, but that is why you put the challenge out to those that may be ready to build a cab for themselves or someone else anyways.
It may also inspire some people who have been procrastinating at starting a project. I know, I am the king of all procrastinators.

I would like to see KrawDaddy, Knievel, and Pixelhugger in a cabinet build off.

I like this idea too. Pictures could be posted and we all could vote on the entrants. We or maybe some of the equipment manufacturers might donate cash or hardware or something to make up a prize list. Kinda like Kevin does with the stuff he reviews on his site with the giveaways. I dunno.
