This looks interesting....
Processor seems kind of low, but it looks like it would
be fun to mess around with!
Anyone heard anything about this?

ive been following for a while actually. Runs linux, huge open source community(most things youll play play will be this way :)). Dual cpu's, vid chip can scale to fit screen. Plays just about anything you want....$189(US Dollars), uses sd cards, runs on 2 AA batteries(get your rechargeables charged!). This is gonna be "THE" portable to have in my opinion, if your into emulation alot. Mame, NES, SNES, Genesis, PC-16, etc etc. Just wish there was a way to get a hands on test.

I'm waiting on some MAME benchmarking to appear for this little guy. If it can play CPS2 games at full framerate, I'm grabbing one.
-
Currently the GP32 (its predecessor) can play 706 romsets as of march 20, 2005 --might be more now (I have attached that list so you can see) If this little unit is just an upgrade from the GP32 its well worth it in my opinion--no proprietary formats/software to hobble your enjoyment--full audio visual experience--make your own movies to watch as you please. Nice 'big" screen with access to dozens of emulators and thousands of games. Nicest thing is that there is an active and ongoing community to develop and tweak the ports that are out there already.
So long as they have kept the GP32 base and improved on it (not dropped features) I would rather have one of these than the "give us your money" PSP

I really want one of these! I've been thinking about getting some sort of handheld, but can't bring myself to buy a PSP. This is going to be a great alternative. Especially because I know I'll be able to mess with it because of linux. No firmware craziness going on with this baby! I just wish it had an internal HD like an iPod so that all my music, vids and games could fit. I wanna play with one before I buy. I guess we'll see.

Check out the previous threads regarding GP32:

IMO they are going to have to kick up the processing speed considerably before I'll buy another version of the Game Park.
BTW, the MAME port only runs a fraction of the games listed.
NES, TG16, Genesis run quite well tho' so it has become more useful as time passes and new emulators have come out for it.
I'll wait for awhile after the GP2X comes out and see what the coders can do with it.

Your link is broken.
Specs:
GP32:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP32#Specifications
ARM 920T, 133MHz (everything - processing, graphics, etc)
8MB RAM
GP2X:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP2X#Specifications
ARM 920T, 200MHz (central processing only)
ARM 940T, 200MHz (dedicated to graphics)
64MB SDRAM
64MB NAND Flash ROM
The GP32 has a small list of emulated games due to it's slow processor and limited resources (memory, etc). The GP2X looks to change that by (a) upping processor speed, (b) adding a dedicated graphics processor, offloading all graphics drawing (and MAME blitting) to the new processor (SDL compatible for XMAME under Linux, which the GamePack will use) and (c) adding a bucket of usable memory.
Again, my desire is for CPS2-level games (and less, obviously) to run full speed 60FPS on this new unit. If that works out, I'll be buying one immediately.
Also, it's worth remembering that there are emulators OTHER than MAME that are much faster. RAINE is a good example. 200-400MHz x86-32 CISC is more than enough to emulate most games with RAINE. 200MHz ARM with some slight frameskip should work a treat on GP2X.

Sorry, the link was for a GP32 search, just trying to share some hands-on experience.
FYI most, not all, GP32's would clock to 166mhz.
I believed the hype on the GP32 and was disappointed, I will wait for someone to share their thoughts after they become available before buying.
Keep us posted when you get one, I'd like to know how it turns out for you. ;D

If I do end up getting one, you can be sure I'll be benching the thing like crazy. Details on MAME-related performance on non-x86 hardware is extremely sketchy on the web.
-
Apparently someone has gotten Win98 to run on it. And people have to remember, the number of megahertz the processor is rated at dosen't mean the same for consoles as it does for PC's

Captain obvious to the rescue! :)
Luckily the GP32X and GPX2 use the same processor (ARM 920T) for central processing, so you can quite happily compare apples with apples there.
With that said, MAME is at times very much MHz bound. There are notable exceptions of course, but due to the very nature of emulation, the more cycles per second of processing, the more emulated cycles per second can be completed. Take for example the lacklustre performance of MAME on PowerPC and other RISC architecture compared to x86.
But anyways... that's all pointless drivel. I want one in my hands for testing now now now! :)

I placed my order tonight.
Anyone else getting one?

(hugs Axim x30 as he
