Title: B/S/T Etiquette
Post by: Jabba on October 17, 2005, 11:37:51 am
What is the proper etiquette in the Forum B/S/T? If you PM the seller that you are interested in an item, he PM's you to say that it is still available, and asks you to Paypal him the money. Before you Paypal him he says sorry, this other guy got me the Paypal first so you're SOL and I sold it to him instead...

Is that the way it works here? He who gets the money to the seller first wins? This kinda makes no sense because seller could theoretically get two Paypals for the same item? What would have happened if this did happen?

Should he not have at least told me he received another offer and ask that I pay him now?

I would have thought I should have been asked before he accepted another offer!

It isn't very hard for him to log into his account and hit the "refund" link.

I guess it's up to the seller. Every time I've bought anything here the seller considered it sold a s soon as I expressed interest, but I usually buy from regulars who I know pretty well.

Yeah Stingray, thats what I would have thought. The guy had like 5 posts to his name so I had to check him out before sending money to the black hole!!! Apparently, someone else had more faith in him!

I don't usually do it around here, cuz this forum is a much calmer B/S/T forum, but at other places, I will do the same type of thing.

I've had a lot of experiences with people who "call dibs" or express interest and spin their tires for days.  I have turned people away b/c I had someone interested already, and in the end wound up with an unsold item.

Like I said, I don't usually mention it here cuz it's never come up, but everywhere else, my item isn't sold until I have the money.  I refund people if I get multiple paypal payments and just apologize (its happened twice).  Of course I usually have a note in my thread saying that this is my policy which cuts down on people's frustration.

Can really answer to the ethics of others, but what I typically do is hold off till the very end to give anyone my paypal address and when people contact me and if I have already given the address to someone and not heard back I consider it pending and communicate that I am giving the other buyer 'X' ammount of time to reply on whether they truly want it or not. I then of course end up giving the partied fair time to communicate back that they do or do not. But I have to agree if they didnt communicate that there was another buyer who had the paypal info that if they gave you their info they should null out the deal with the other guy.

Been up for 36 straight hours so if there is rambling on in the above ramble; I do appologize.

I figure first person who says dibs has the shot and if he doesn't come through in a comfortable timeframe you go to the next guy on the list.  This seems to be the fairest to me but on the other hand if the guy says first pay first win, then you go with that.

I guess next time I'll ask first to see what the sellers rules are. I'm still kinda pissed!

First thing to do is check to see if Gozur has the same thing for sale. He's always a great guy to deal with.

Every time I have bought something here, I tell the seller I am committed, and he announces it sold.  I'm very fast with the Paypal button, so they get their paypal payment email shortly thereafter.

It's really up to the individual seller.  Some wait until payment is in, some announce sold immediately.  They really shouldn't be telling multiple people to send payment in when they only have one item, though.

I'm usually pretty quick on the PayPal button too, but the low post count caused me some concern. If it was a regular here, Paypal would have been sent much sooner!

well I'm a money order buyer, so I'd be pissed if I told the buyer I wanted it then told the buyer I sent out the m.o. only for him to sell it to someone else who paypaled after my communications with the seller......

spill the beans on the seller so I can make sure to boycott them.....

Nah, don't think that would be fair. He prolly just came and went. Won't see him again. If I do though, I'll let you know...

Personally, I think you made the right choice, checking out the seller. Which is worse, losing out on a HOT DEAL, or sending your money into the oblivion?

If you said the second option, have I told you that my uncle was the general and prince of a country closed to Nigeria, called Scamistan? I've got 8 jillion dollars to embezzle, and I need your help insert name here!
