hi. i wanna use advancemame/menu using an rgb monitor, how do i set it up the first time, coz i figure that it cant display correctly at first so how do i go and navigate in dos mode like in advcfg, advv etc. thanks.

use a normal PC monitor first.

ok thanks, any more tips and advice?

Print out the installation files. They are very lengthy and you WILL need to consult them as you're going along configuring settings. It's not very straight-forward, so follow all instructions closely.

what are you using for a graphics card and are you using a jpac? Dos or Linux?
You might also want to keep arcadeos in mind if advmenu gives problems. I had no problem getting advmame working with games from the command line, but for whatever reason I couldn't get advmenu to work. Kept giving me a no supported graphics mode error. Arcadeos worked like gangbusters though.

Yeah, I did that and I still couldn't get it to work. Got frustrated as hell after a few hours and just switched to arcadeos, which worked the first time, so I never bothered going back and trying to figure it out. I'm sure it's something stupid like I fat-fingered a character in the advmenu.rc. One of these days I'll go back and get it working, but arcadeos has been pretty good for me so far.

You need to copy over the graphics mode info from your ADVMAME.rc file over to the ADVMENU.rc file.
This is how advmenu works:
If there is a modeline called "default_graph" available it will be used. All other modelines are ignored.
If "default_graph" isn't found it will use the parameters display_width and device_video_format to generate a modeline.
Best way to run advmenu is to calibrate a modeline that looks fine on the monitor and then call this "default_graph"
