Title: Installing a Marquee light.
Post by: ParityBit on October 14, 2005, 11:13:23 am
Hello all,

I have unscrewed the Marquee glass from the top of my newly acquired Arcade Cabinet.

There is no Marquee light installed, mounting for a lamp or even wiring.

Therefore, how should I go about installing a Marquee light?
What mounting/fixings should I purchase? Also, with regards to the wiring, where should I take power from (for correct voltage feed)? I'm sure there's a simple installation procedure out there somewhere!

I find it interesting that there's no existence of a Marquee light in the Cabinet, as I presumed all Arcade Cabinets were fitted with these as a standard feature?

I hope someone can give me some pointers?

I bought a 2 bulb florescent lighting system from home depot for 10$.  I had to add my own plug end (which I liked, allowed me to make the plug the correct length.  I then used double sided epoxy tape to mount it to the top of the inside of the cabinet with the two bulbs facing the marquee and reinforced the attachment with 3 3/4" wood screws from the inside of the lighting fixture to the top of the cabinet.

I used the epoxy tape because I could not mount the light assembly flush sideways because the piece that covered the internal components had a lip on both sides.  The epoxy tape lifted the assembly 1/8" off the wood to give me room to slide the cover on.

I also bought some aluminium tape and tin foil to cover the entire inside of the marquee with reflective material to brighten the sign, but hind sight being 20/20 I would not do that again because I could not see any noticeable difference in how bright the sign was.

Abomi: Don't you find your marquee is too bright?
Most cabs use a single florescent bulb fixture.

Go to www.happcontrols.com and order # 49-1001-00 Fluorescent Light fixture Assembly, complete with bulb & starter.

Inside your cabinet you pickup AC power for it from the PRIMARY side of any transformer in it.

Well I installed those promedia speakers and the sound with them inside and outside the speaker cases was allot different so I wanted them inside the case.  When I mounted them I noticed that the satelight speaker cases would cover up a large portion of light that the marquee would get.  So I got the 2 light bulb one to make up for the loss of light.  I then frosted the back piece of plexi to disperse the light so that there wouldn't be darker spots where the speaker cases blocked the light (took sandpaper and made the plexi opaque).  Now it seems to be fine, I don't notice it being any brighter or dimmer than any arcade Ive played on.

Also if you decide to go that route home depot sells that same thing for 7$ instead of the $20 dollars plus S&H happs wants.
