Hi guys,
I recently made the decision to make my own mame cab. I'll be coming to this site for lots of ideas!
I ran across a good deal on some PC speakers, and was wondering if they would be good for the arcade cabinet?

I havent started my cab yet so im not sure about the forces. My speakers will be under the marquee on the panel directly above the screen.
what id try is buy the speakers and place them near you monitor and use them for a day or so. see how they affet the monitor.
i saw those a few days ago but i already have 3 sets of pc speakers so i dont need any. but when buying anything check the customer reviews and google for more reviews especially game sites like gamespot. good luck.

I used a similar set in my cab.

Great replies guys. Mccoy, nice cab! I thought about putting my sub underneath the cab as well (next to the computer). But I figured it would vibrate against the wood too much. How does it sound down there?
You didn't have any shielding problems or discoloration on yor monitor when placing the speakers for your cab?
SithMaster, thats a good idea. I'm picking up the speakers today from Circuit City. I'll see what happens when I leave them next to my TV set. Either way, I'm going to have to take them out of their plastic casing, right?
A stupid question: Does the speaker grill affect the quality of the sound in any way? Or is it only a cosmetic feature?
-
Only if you need to. You could just mount them out of the box so to speak.
the grill just protects the speaker cone and may have a slight impact on the sound only cuase sound bounces off it.
i may buy these cuase my pc speakers dont have a woofer.

Just got back from Circuit City with the speakers. For $10 i'd definetly recommend them. It's nice that they come with a small woofer, and the volume/bass is controlled via a wired remote. That will provide convenient access to volume once the cab is finished. Not sure how I would go about taking them out of their plastic casing if I decided to do so. Good thing that will be one of the last steps and I still have a while to think about it.

I had no problems with my setup. The grills give a good finish look. For this application, they will have no effect on sound quality. Like I stated above, I cut off the speaker wire right behind the computer speakers, and spliced them directly to the car speakers.

Well i hate ciruicity. i went on friday for them and they said to come back tomorrow becuase they havent put them out yet. I went today the next day and they are sold out. wtf ciruitcity wtf.

That sucks... sorry to hear that. Sale is over now, but was anybody able to pick up a set?

I have a question. I just bought the amp audio set from Happ Controls. I bought 5" speakers for it from Happ (http://www.happcontrols.com/interactive/accessories/49022800.htm). Well, I got them in today and when I hooked 'em up the sound was very thin and "tinny". Plus one of the speakers was crackling a bit on really loud parts, even on lower computer audio settings. Are speakers like this the norm? I read somewhere that you can buy "mid" level speakers that produce good balanced sounds. I need some good overall ones, can anyone suggest good car speakers or something else I can pick up?

I just bought a set of logitech x230's from bestbuy, and they are very good for this application. The subwoofer gives a very full sound unlike other cheaper computer speakers. They are on sale right now for about 40 bucks. On my personal cabinet, I used a similar setup with computer speakers. I spliced in car speakers into the speaker wires and I love it.
BTW, if you want a game that will bring out the bass in the speakers,
try ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN!!! It is one of the video pinball games. Not that great of a game, but man was I blown away by the sound! It is my test game for speakers. You'll know if you have the real deal or not.

I think I bought those same speakers (or very similar ones) when I built my cab:
