How does it work?
-
Lots of people are, and it works GREAT!
If your Xbox is modded, there is a ton of great emulators that have been ported from PC, including MAME, so you get all those + you get all the great new games that came out for the console. The Xbox is especially a good choice for arcade cabinet use if you are a fan of fighters.

I am... I purchased the x-arcade controlers which work with all current console systems as well as the PC and then put them built my own housing for them because I wanted a 4 player control panel and the x-arcade housing would have looked out of place on my cab

Hmm, I may have to take the plunge and add an xbox inside the cab. I'm just *DYING* to play some Geometry Wars in it. If only someone would release it as a stand alone PC version.

For those who've no idea what Geometry Wars is (like me):

Just tried it out - great game! Be warned that to select/play it you need to use 2 analog thumbsticks. So this makes it very difficult (/impossible?) to play with arcade controls :(

Hello,
Does anyone know if there is a place where you can buy a VGA cable for an Xbox? I would like to be able to hook my Xbox to my PC monitor then I could put the Xbox in my cabinet.
Thanks

My friend uses X2VGA+ High Definition VGA Pack by Neoya and loves it.
Here is the link. http://www.x2vga.com/

I have a Dreamcast in my cab right now, I should really consider putting an Xbox in there. I only play Street Figher III: 3rd Strike on the DC anyways, and this is on the XBOX along with Soul Calibur 2, and like 3 Dead or Alive Games! I'm down! I also heard 3rd Strike was a lot more similar to the CPSIII hardware on the Xbox than the DC version...they seem the same to me, I dunno.

I have a DC in mine too (not quite working yet), but I have found my DC games list is getting smaller. The xbox has improved equivalents of a lot of the DC games. The only ones I want to play on the DC now are Virtua Tennis/2 and Power Stone/2.
However I bought the Anniversary Edition of Street Fighter 2 for the xbox and I don't like the way the graphics are displayed on the screen - looks like it has a (bilinear?) filter applied and looks very blurry. In contrast Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the DC looks nice & crisp. I don't know if all the Capcom 2d fighters on xbox are like this but I hope not...

Kind of OT...but wow:

Geometry Wars is an awesome game.
It's a darn shame that Quasimoto doesn't sell the components of their panel seperately, because I would LOVE to have been able to play this game on my cab, and their little analog stick setup would be perfect.

Yeah I wondered about those sticks. Maybe we should hassle them with emails. We're not exactly their target customers so they would actually benefit from selling parts seperately.

Thanks everyone who responded to my query.

You can only play certian games tho right? Like one stick games without analog controls (ie fighting games) Nothing like halo. Correct me if im wrong.

If you go the XArcade BYOA kit you can play games that use ANALOG or DIGITAL controls. The catch is that it uses a switch to determine ANALOG or DIGITAL mode. So you wouldnt really be playing games that needed both ANALOG and DIGITAL during the gameplay at the same time.
Its a good cheap solution and if you want to add a different console to the cab, you simply buy the appropriate console adapter. Currently there are adapters for XBOX, PS1/PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube and PC.
Hope it helps

I heard a rumour that all Capcom 2D/Low-res fighters will have this feature (upsampled to 480p with bilinear filter) on all future XBox and PS2 releases. Take that with a grain of salt, as it was definitely not confirmed by any official source. I do hope if it is true, they at least give an in-game option to disable the feature.
I can understand with the gaming market all salivating for HD-resolution gaming that companies would do this, but it leaves us low-res lovers with a bad taste in our mouths.

You can do this with the Ultimarc adaptor too...but I just don't like playing games which use an analog stick with a digital stick. Waste of time imo...

I hope this isn't the case too, I mean surely the majority of gamers are using normal tv's??

It is true, but you CAN go to options and disable it, so all is good.
Go to options.
Go to Adjust Screen.
Turn the filter off.
;)

That's great news, I'll try that out. Thanks :)

Check this out:
www.quasimoto.com
They sell (IMHO over priced) full-sized arcade cabs with a regular TV and an xbox in it. If you look at the pics of the control panel at the bottom of each players controls (just to the right of the grey buttons) are a pair of sticks with a blue base, and an orange top. Those are the analog controls from the xbox controller. Basically their button layout is like an XBOX with the start, triggers, bk & wh buttons all done with buttons. THe joystick is the D-Pad, and the 2 sticks at the bottom as mentioned are the analog controls.
IOW, it IS possible. BTW, andone know where I can actually buy those kinds of sticks for my control panel?
Also, if you wanna stick an xbox into a real jamma cab, ultimarc sells xbox-to-jamma converters, etc. I don't think it's linked anywhere on their main pages, but I think you can search for xbox on their site and pull them up. They are pretty cheap too.

I don't know about the kit, but I am guessing that it works like the pre-built one that you buy. I have the 2-player x-arcade for the xbox. You hold down a sequence of buttons and they joysticks switch from digital mode to analog.
The analog controls work great when playing Mario Kart via the n64 emu that I am running on the xbox, but when I try certain games in MAME (curiously mostly the vector based-games so far...) the sticks in analog mode just don't work at all. :-( I have to switch back to the regular xbox controller. YMMV.
