It's not so much that he is offering everyone the chance to finish their machine, It's the principle of asking the person that put all of the hard work in if they mind that he prints it and sells it.
The like's of mahuti, zorg and everyone else who has put so much effott into reworking these and posting them for everyone to use for their own use have not even been asked if they mind.
I know that mahuti would not go along with this as it clearly states in the terms and conditions on the web site that the work must not be sold.

I'm not sure how I stand on this topic.
It doesn't feel right that someone is selling it commercially and making profit off of the hard work of others.
But on the other hand, is it any different if he only offer the printing services and told people where to get the art?
I think most of us here download and uses the art in one form or another.
I know its different but hard to see where the lines end. ???
Its kind of like the Mame (TM) ROM burning services. They are only selling the services of burning the Roms and not the Roms itself. But some ppl are selling them for $70+ and you KNOW they are profitting off of the Roms. >:(
So I guess I don't see it as being good but its not as bad as someone trying to trademark or patent Mame (TM) and had nothing to do with the development of it.

I'll admit I'm on the fence here. The purpose of uploading art to the localarcade library is precisely so people have a resource to create repro art to finish/restore their cabs. There isn't a big difference between someone emailing MameMarquees a file from the Library, paying to have it printed, and what this guy is doing. The only difference is that this guy is advertising the available artwork.
It's kind of grey.... (unless you get into the whole copyright issues, but hopefully we won't go down that road AGAIN)

Agree with RayB for the most part.
Is mostly irrelevant anyway ... The Evil Corporate Overload (tm) has undoubtedly seen this and the seller is asking to be spanked.
It is somewhat odd that, as a group (this thread not indicative ... yet), we seem to respect the "rights" of people who do things for free that benefit us, but not the rights of those who put up their own money to obtain legal rights to various properties in order to turn a profit ... hmmm ...
EDIT: In case nobody gets the reference, I am not talking about the seller in the preceding comment.
NOTE: To be clear, I am very happy that so many people have put so much time into preserving the artwork -- thanks and respect to them. In the event that I can't find artwork for cabinets that come into my possession, I may well avail myself of their efforts.
Cheers.

THE purpose of me running localarcade is to preserve the art... so much of it gets destroyed... it's such a shame. Like mame, there are side benefits to my attempts at preservation, however.
Unfortunately, the more obvious the bootlegging is, the more likelihood that I will eventually be forced to take stuff down, and the more likely it is that I will get sued. If any legit organization ever asked me to take stuff down I would.. in a heartbeat, but asking nicely won't necessarily be someone's first course of action.
I generally try to stay under the radar, I try not to encourage discussion of localarcade in terms of legalities. And I do my best not to encourage widescale art profiteering. For instance, I only have a link to mamemarquees as a courtesy, because Scott has been so good to so many users here.... I don't get paid for it. He was good to us before localarcade even existed. Anyway, someone always brings it up the tough issues though, and forces me to come out of the woodwork and try to legitimize my project. I don't know that I fully can, I just know that I feel better knowing that I might be helping to preserve the roots of an interesting and unique art movement. The game companies consider the stuff assets... I consider it art, something bigger than their corporate interests... something that they never will.
I have mixed feelings about my own site. I think about taking it offline some times. The more I have to talk about it, the more I feel like taking it down. Really, it was sort of just a BYOAC friends helping friends site... now it reaches across the globe... about 750,000 visits, 1300 registered members. It's gotten a little out of hand.
That being said... we work hard to preserve the stuff. Someone else works hard to pervert our aims. That's a pretty common thread throughout this entire hobby. Hypocrisy kind of goes hand in hand with the emulation world... and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Everyone here has never heard of your site, and it does not exist. Please move along...

Well said, Mahuti. The level of dignity on this forum never ceases to amaze me.
Cheers,

I really don't think he should be selling artwork that I designed for $43 US with shipping.
I'm going to ask him to remove it or reduce the price to $20.

Wow - that was fast. Either gremlinsolutions is monitoring this thread or he responded to your email very quickly.
Your's was number 5 on his list...

Classicarcadegrafix.com sells the Starfighter sideart and marquee that I made for my cab and uploaded for others. When I first found out he was selling it I was pissed, but now that I look at it, I'm flattered. It's cool to see what I spent time in creating being sold so others can enjoy it too.
If I can by artwork that others have created/re-created allready to be installed on my machine, then I see no problem in it. It saves me time and $$ by having someone else do it for me.
As long as he doesn't take credit for the artwork himself I see no problem in it.

Generally, I feel the same way . . .
Not exactly the same example, but I did some panel layouts for display in a frontend (before Johnny5 made them obsolete). I had them available for download, but not in a large zip file (bandwidth concerns at MAMEworld), and then I was stealing, er, acquiring the latest CP packs and marquee packs at Emu-France and saw layouts and was really surprised (and flattered) that they were my files.
At first I was taken aback that they didn't contact me first, then I realized that I was glad they were up there, so no problem in the end.
I wouldn't have a problem with someone selling printed copies, but selling the images themselves on a website would bother me, although if it was E-bay, I doubt I'd do much more than post a comment in the auction that "I created these images and they can be downloaded for free from www. . . .

Some of the artwork I created is on the arcade library site. I don't care who uses it or how. If I did, I wouldn't have uploaded it. It's not like I own the copyright anyway, all I did was reproduce existing artwork in a format that's usable for printing.

Since you aren't going to enforce your copyright on your artwork, I am filing papers to steal it from under your nose. If you decide to file papers, then I will wthdraw my filing.
Sound Familiar ;D
(Just kidding for those of you who don't get the meaning of Stingray's avatar)
