If you open bootxp, you can delete the safety backup somewhere in the options. I had the same issue, and deleting that backup removed the issue.

You don't need an alternative app to change the boot logo. This walkthrough is for Win2k, but it should (***should***) work for XP. As always, make a backup and use common sense.

Right click your computer, Properties, Advanced,In Startup And Recovery click Settings, Unclick Time to display list of operating system.
(If it still starts up with the old boot screen go though all that again and this time pick Edit the startup options manually , and delete the standerd one I think its this one
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
It should be obvious which one,

It modified the boot.ini file in the root of C. This is a read only file. You can open it and look at it but in order to edit it you first need to remove the read-only attribute. BE VERY CAREFUL if you edit it manually. An error can cause a lot of headaches.

Instead of deleting the backup line, make sure that the new bootxp one is the default, and uncheck the "time to display list of operating systems:" checkbox.
