I'm looking for an analog encoder so I can hook up some positional guns (as opposed to light guns). Ultimarc's site says that they are out of the A-PAC, and I haven't heard back from Andy about when they might be available again. The AKI seems okay, but I'd rather not pay via PayPal. Are there any alternatives to these two products? I wish GroovyGameGear.com made one, as I really like they KeyWiz encoders.

Dual Strike Hack???
-
I'd rather not do any hacks. I've done a bunch before (keyboards, mice, gamepads, etc), and really like how clean manufactured encoder boards are. Plus, I need 4 axes, so I would need to find and hack 2 Dual Strikes.

You could E-mail DaveB and see if he'll accept anything besides PayPal . . .

I could, but let's pretend for a second that for some reason I can't or won't.
Is there a third product in existence, similar to the AKI and A-PAC, that I could buy instead?

Oops - forgot - there's this, and it's Canadian - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=41992.0

$89? Even in $CAD - deeyamn! :o
-
Well its not really an encoder but you could change the pots on your analog device to 100K pots and wire it to your pc gameport... although based on what you said you'd rather not hack.

How about in DOS?
I am using DOS, so the A-PAC(even if it were available) and the AKI won't work for me, because of the USB/Windows requirement.

[cough] Umm, how about Happs (http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/950800xx.htm), CH Products (http://www.chproducts.com/oem/misc_usbkit.html), Epic (http://www.flightlink.com/epic/), or deva (http://www.deva.co.uk/product/deva020.htm)? All same or more than the plasma or plasma lite. ;) (I never heard of the deva one, but all came up on the first page googled.)
[shrug] Also, even personally I'd get the $89 plasma lite (http://www.betainnovations.com/hardware/plasma_lite.html) version, the $95 plasma (http://www.betainnovations.com/hardware/plasma.html) version can show as 2 joysticks (totaling 16 analog axes), so that's a much more reasonable $48 (CAD) per "joystick", if you use all of it.

I thought randy made one? GP-Wiz or something?

I thought randy made one? GP-Wiz or something?
Nope - GP-Wiz is a gamepad encoder - no analog support.
GP-Wiz49 in a 49-way joystick and buttons encoder - no straight analog support

Ahhh... that's right. Thanks. :)

About the A-PAC. This is now back in stock. It was out of stock owing to a shortage of the blank microcontroller chips. These are still in short supply so I have decided to put back in stock some pre-release versions. There is only one difference in this version, which is the description string which shows in Control Panel states "G-PAC". They are identical in all other respects.

I have the Happs encoder board (not the analog model though), and it works flawlessly. However, I bought it without doing my homework on pricing and availability of other products. These things are almost $200.
Edit: Well, when I bought it they were almost $200. Now, they're about $150...
