I am wondering why my animated avatar gif is not animating the way it should in the forum.
Not important, but I am curious. ???

Don't "upload your own picture", instead select:
I have my own pic:
Specify your own avatar by URL. (ex: http://www.mypage.com/mypic.gif)
And do it that way
-
or rezize it

I'd answer you on how to do this, but I think you'd be better served by checking my profile, going to "read last posts from this member" and finding the answer from the last bazillion times this's been asked.
Or use the search. But that isn't as much fun. Although I DID find several threads answering this.
Meh.

What I ran into is that if your avitar is any bigger than 80x80, the website will resize it, and you will lose the animation.

correct, you can use http://www.gifworks.com/ to rezize your image so that the largest side is 80 then it will upload fine....
