Howdy all.
I'm setting up my jukebox, you can see my Progress at this link below:

I have nearly finished ripping all my cd's.... the next step is to convert all my vinyl.
Can anyone suggest the best software for this purpose.
I guess this is a bit of an open ended question... however I'm looking for software that is automated in the sense that, it will rip and attach album details.
Is there a program that will attached or load the details from freedb etc.
Is there is a way to attach album and track details without too much typing etc?
Even if anyone has done this task before, I am eager for suggestions.
You can take it for granted that I am running:
Win XP, Pent 4, Turntable connected via Pre Amp thru Sound Card.

Rip a vinyl and auto tag it, this is a joke post right?
Well anyway if it isn't and you want to rip vinyl (I don't reccomend it) then you will need to hook up a turn table to your line in and then use some sound recording software to record the input. I used a program caled SPINDOCTOR by adaptech many when i did it but that must have been about 8 years back so there are probably other products out there.
Instead of ripping vinyl you would be better downloading the MP3's of them that somebody has made from the CD. As you own the original vinyl this might not be quite legal but is not blatent piracy and you will have a better sounding file. If you rip the vinyl yourself it will not sound great....
Anyway i am sure this is a joke and i have just been suckered.... ;D

I ripped my entire vinyl collection. It took me about two years to do about 150 albums.
The software I used was two-fold:
1. Record the album side using Wave Repair, which is freeware if used only for recording (not restoration, click and pop removal, etc). This is a great program for .wav recording from vinyl or any external source.

2. Convert the resultant .wav files to mp3 files.
For step 2, I used db-poweramp back when it had a built in mp3 encoder. But there are many programs out there that will do the conversion. A used book store (eg. Half Priced Books in my area) frequently will have shelves of used computer software.
I encoded all of my lp's using the lame settings of -alt -preset -extreme, which was very time consuming even on a fast PC. They still don't sound as good as the source material. They just sound a bit flat compared to the original. It may be the quality of my sound card, but I believe it's just a result of the .mp3 format.
It can be done. And you end up with a collection that is great for your jukebox, because it is YOUR collection which YOU paid for over your life. I also have picked up many used LP's at used bookstores to recapture most of the LP's that I grew up with in the '60's and '70's. Again, owning the original frees up my conscience.
Honestly, I don't buy CD's now. I use I-Tunes for the few newer songs I want, and hunt the used bookstores for almost everything else.

I can second the use of Wave Repair. I found that program awhile back when I wanted to transfer some tapes to my computer so that I could then burn them to CD. Same concept as the vinyl transfer. I hooked up my tape deck to the sound card, recorded it using Wave Repair and then burned them to CD.

I forgot the main question was what could be done automatically in terms of tagging vinyl.
Beats me....I typed every )(*#%^ track in by hand and got my album art from either Ebay (using printkey) or a digital camer.

rofl... No this was far from a joke, but if it makes you feel better I had a great laugh when I read your reply.
I found a program called " Audio Grabber" which is ripping to wav files just fine.
But all the Artist/Album & Song title typing is killing me.
I am cutting and pasting from freedb.org, but I was wondering if there was a program that will rip.. give you the field to put the the freedb catalogue number in and then update all the other info automaticly.
this is a joke post right?

Another possibility, since the audio quality might be a little lacking if you rip from vinyl, is sign up for iTunes or some other service like that. Check to see if they have the songs you need.

I use Audacity [ http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ ] for ripping audio tapes thru the phono jack. Records as .wav and exports & tags to .mp3. I rip the tape as a block of sound then edit it into individual tracks. Very easy. If it works for tapes it'll work for records.
Step 01: Connect your audio line from tape/record player to pc.
Step 02: Open Audacity
Step 03: Play your media
Step 04: Press record.
Step 05: Edit & convert to .mp3

about the process of ripping your vinyl i, can't help you, but in order to clean your resulting mp3s, try the wave editor found in Nero ( i know, isn't free )

The Software is based on the algorithms of the professional soundrecording tool called SAMPLITUDE.
With this it is possible to rip, clean and transfer your vinyls to mp3 or whatever even if you are a novice in this field.
