I just got finished hooking up my 49 way joystick, and I have a few problems. When looking in the joystick calibration all the directions/positions work except for those on the main 4 axes. The joystick is not in diagnal only mode either... also when playing games it seems as though its pulling left, I use mame32, should i just adjust the slider in mame32, that didnt seem to help, but I didnt try all the options?

Sounds like you may have crossed some of your wires. It's pretty easy to do.
-
Don't want to hijack but what do you or how do you connect a 49 way to a pc.
Sorry but thanks.
-
It looks like everything is connected correctly... I guess I could go through and re wire it all... but its a huge pain in the ass, so If anyone else has any other ideas before i do that... You connect it using a GP wiz encoder, you just have to wire it all correctly ;)

Like he said... GP-Whiz encoder, which you can get at this link (http://www.groovygamegear.com/cgi/surfshop/shop.cgi?ud=MEw3QVA5MzZOUiUlJSUlJTExMjc4MjUyMzMA&storeid=1&c=search.htm&categories=0041)

Be sure you get the GP-Wiz 49 and not the GP-Wiz 32 if you are connecting a 49-way joystick.

eh... any more help? no one else ever have this problem?

Are the cardinal directions missing? Or screwy?
-
by cardinal you mean straight up & down & left an right then yes, none of those directinos will register in the windows joystick menu.
The x's are the areas that will not work on the calibration:
123x123
456x456
789x789
xxx1xxx
123x123
456x456
789x789
-
its strange, because it is only like this in 49 way mode, when in four way it will detect the straight directions, but it is still doing weird things.

Maybe one (or both) of the middle pins is not making a good contact. I can't remember OTTOMH how Randy calls the pins in his docs, but for each axis there's the 'D' (direction) pin, then value pins 'A', 'B', & 'C' (sometimes labeled 1, 2, & 3). I'm talking about one of the 'B' pins not making contact.
Not sure why both axes were effected, but I couldn't go in either of the cardinal directions when my 49-way had 9 of the ten pins connnected, with only one of the axes' B pins not. However the pattern was a little different on what won't work: (IIRC OTTOMH)
33xxx33
x22x22x
xx1x1xx
xxx0xxx
xx1x1xx
x22x22x
33xxx33
'x's not working. My Y axis middle pin was not making contact. Notice the differences between the Y axis & X axis not working.
I know it's not the same pattern, but try reconnecting the middle pins (one at a time so not to disconnect one at the same time you connect the other ;)).

ahhh, no luck.. I give up, maybe Ill come back to it someday

Make sure that the stick isn't geting kicked into WILLIAMS mode! When you first plug it in or apply power, make sure that the stick is centered. Any other state will be autodetected as Williams mode and, if I'm not mistaken, do exactly what you describe.
If it is centered there are few possibilities:
Shorted wire
Problem with the stick itself.
Problem with the GP-Wiz49
Most problems are of the first and distant second variety as the GP-Wiz49 is tested 100% before shipping.
