I haven't been on the scene that long but I think releases came out almost hourly at one point in time :)

(from the www.mame.net forum)
----------------------------------------------------------
0.63

An interim release with many things submitted in the past two months not
included yet.

These drivers have improved GRAPHICS:
-------------------------------------

- Subroc-3D, Turbo and Buck Rogers use the artwork to show the LED counters.
[Stefan Jokish]

- Fixed colors in Dynamic Ski. [Stefan Jokish]

These drivers have improved SOUND:
----------------------------------

- Samples support in Subroc-3D [Dave France]

- Fixed noie frequency in the Exidy games. [Jim Hernandez]

- Preliminary Namco NA sound support. [Phil Stroffolino]

Other drivers changes:
----------------------

- Partially simulated the protection in Birdie Try [Angelo Salese]

- Improved decryption in Quiz F1 1-2 Finish, it's still incomplete though.
[Angelo Salese]

- Fixed ball position recognition in Golfing Greats. [Olivier Galibert]

Changes to the main program:
----------------------------

- New options -nodisclaimer and -nogameinfo to disable startup screens.
Warnings about incorrect emulation are not disabled. [Aaron Giles]

- Replaced RDTSC timing with QueryPerformanceCounter. This should fix
problems
on SpeedStep notebooks. It seems, however, that it causes even worse
problems
on other machines. Therefore, the old behaviour can be forced with the new
-rdtsc option. [smf]

Source:
-------

- Now compiled with MinGW 2.0/GCC 3.2. There might be bugs caused by the new
compiler, let us know.

- All new, much better, YM2413 emulation. [Jarek Burczynski]

- Drum support in YM2608 emulation (check e.g. Tail 2 Nose). [Jarek
Burczynski]

- Moved most of the file I/O out of the OS depndant code and into the core.
Added two new types, mame_file and osd_file, which enforce better type
checking throughout the system (and prevents confusing the two).
Instead of calling osd_fopen, osd_fread, osd_fwrite, etc., you now call
mame_fopen, mame_fread, mame_fwrite, etc. The osd_* calls are reserved
to the core.
All the ZIP handling is done in the mame_file functions, so it will be
inherited by all ports.
[Aaron Giles]

- [Win32] The diff, snap, cfg, nvram, etc. directories are created
automatically if they don't exist the first time MAME tries to create a
file
there. [Aaron Giles]

- MIPS III/IV CPU cores. [Aaron Giles]

- ADSP-2115 CPU support. [Aaron Giles]

- TMS32025 CPU core. [Quench]

- Fixed YMF278B emulation. [R.Belmont]

MAME Testers bugs fixed (there are probably more)
-----------------------

galaga37b8gre [Satoshi Suzuki]
galaga37b16gre [Satoshi Suzuki]
cutieq37b2gre [Stephane Humbert]
crusn062gre [Aaron Giles]
totcarn062gre [Aaron Giles]

Are releases usually this close together?

Since you asked, here is a blatant copy 'n paste from the infinitely wise Eldio on some MAME release stats, although it isn't current for the releases in the last year (I'm sure he's still keeping track, though :) ):

That's it. I am going to start the "MAME Addicts Anonymous" group
as I believe that some of you people go way too far into this MAME
phenomenom. Anyway... here are some vital statistics... (denial)

The one known as MAME first graced the public screens back in the
early part of February 1997. Dubbed as "version 00.1" it supported
a grand total of 5 sets. In those days of course, developers lived
in dark damp caves, using computers carved of stone with modems that
utilised the um bonfire smoke signal method. Oh the horror.

Things have changed since then of course and including version 0.55,
a total of 106 public MAME releases have been made. For the past four
and a half years or so, the Evil Dr Salmoria and his cult followers
have molded it into the leet piece of leet piecyness that so many
many people enjoy today. Oh the horror.

Shocking news just in...

A (classified) squad of debuggers have just revealed lines of code
within MAME that produce subliminal "Insert Coin" messages at regular
intervals. 9 out of 10 cats say that they didn't notice.

Now for some useless statistics...

-AVERAGE NUMBER OF DAYS BETWEEN RELEASES...

2001 30
2000 23
1999 13
1998 17
1997 12

37b to present 29
36b to 36final 14
35b to 35final 12
34b to 34final 13
33b to 33final 12
31 to 01 15
All MAME 16

-BEST DAY FOR A RELEASE...

2001 Thu
2000 Tue
1999 Sat Sun
1998 Sun
1997 Sun

37b to present Thu
36b to 36final Sat
35b to 35final Thu
34b to 34final Sun
33b to 33final Sun
31 to 01 Sun
All MAME Sun

-AVERAGE NUMBER OF SETS ADDED PER RELEASE...

2001 65
2000 38
1999 31
1998 35
1997 9

37b to present 57
36b to 36final 30
35b to 35final 28
34b to 34final 36
33b to 33final 17
31 to 01 15
All MAME 29

-IN CLOSING...

Taken that all that into consideration it would seem that 2001 has been
the best year for MAME so far with an average of 65 sets added per release.
But for 2001, an average of 30 days passes between each release. Thursday
is the best day for a 2001 release too.

So as today is 18th October (31 days after 0.55 release) and today being
a Thursday... c'mon MAME 0.56 : )

So does these new options mean you don't need to recompile to get rid of the "ok" screens?  I didn't see anything about the fix to speed up loading of the tape games, was this done in .61 or .62? (still on .60)

Thanks for any info....

Apparently. In the readme file it says -nodisclaimer and -nogameinfo, but it's actually -skip_disclaimer and -skip_gameinfo

Those MAME stats are a little scary...  that Eldio's a character!
Are any of the new games CHD files?
The only way I know to speed up the tape drive games is to press F10 to increase the game speed.

Anyway, yeah!! More games!!! :D ;D :)

If one were using AdvMame there is an option to have the first x amount of seconds be "turbo"/unthrottled  to make games that load slowly/have long boot sequences be ready faster.  Doesn't r-type or gradius or something have like an interminable bootup sequence where it warms up for 90 seconds or something?

*shrug* just a thought

For the Deco Cassette games:

Add to src\machine\decoass.c line 168 before cpu_set_nmi_line( 0, CLEAR_LINE );

Has this been implemented to .61/.62/.63?  Just curious.  Can't remember where I got this "fix" from, it is not mine, and I apologize in advance for not knowing who to credit this to.....

The place I've always found it is M.A.S.H.'s site at MameWorld, he has a build of fixMAME (FMAME) that includes it.  AdvanceMAME works also.

I doubt you'll actually see it in a MAME build, but then I never thought you'd see "Don't show disclaimers" as a command line option either!!!.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if Ming 2.0 is REQUIRED to compile 0.63 and/or if older builds can be compiled with Ming 2.0 and still work???
