I have noticed that most 2 piece cabinet designs seem to use a similar concept to what joymonkey has here in his drawing (shameless used without permission, as it is one of the few of this type I have ever seen and liked). At least most 2 piece cabinets designed by BYOAC members use that method. Copied from the ever popular lusid cabinet iirc.
But I have also noticed that most factory built 2 piece cabinets use a "monitor head" design. Like in the second picture here.
Which do we see as better? Why? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

My first thought is that the second design lends itself better to disassembly and stacking, making it easier to move a bunch of them in a truck.
The first design, if left to its own, would have to have the marquee touching the floor to be stable, and wouldn't let you stack anything on top.

When I think of "real" arcade games with a two piece design I think of the golden tee cabs which are more like the first design than a "monitor head" design.

When you say Golden Tee cabinets do you mean this?
Those are a one piece cabinet. Or at the absolute best it takes itself and the marquee off, dropping a whopping 40 lbs from the weight of the cabinet.
I have never seen a factory 2 piece upright that used any other design besides the monitor head design (which was really popular with Atari from 1984 to 1989).

Yep. I thought you just meant that the sides are in two pieces. Is the lusid style really meant to be made so you can take the monitor part off? I thought it was just for looks. ???

In the UAII design, the original plans have you screwing the upper-sides to the lower part of the cabinet. So from that standpoint, it's all for show. I changed it around and plan to bolt the top to the bottom, though.

yeah ... usually anyone who plans to disassemble their UAII typically uses angle iron to bolt the two halfs together.
It's just they most people need have any intentions are tearing it down once it's all together ;D
