Title: Home Tournament Rules
Post by: buks on September 19, 2005, 01:28:59 pm
Just wondering what rules you people use for tournaments. Me and my mate use the following:

We did have extra points for highest score in a round but it seemed too complicated and in the case where one player dominated in a game, they would walk away with too many points.

If more than 2 people are playing then we just choose 1 game each.

We've had some very tight tourneys and always end up having a laugh. Since I fitted my coin door it seems to add to the tention too.

Since I fitted my coin door it seems to add to the tention too.

How does the coin door add to the tension?  [Slow panning shot of hand inserting coin in slow motion, cut to player one's lip drenched in nervous sweat as player two looks apprehensively, cut to POV shot of coin dropping in chute, cue dramatic sting as credit registers].

DaveMMR - he he he - I like that  ;D

Its difficult to explain really - maybe tension was the wrong word ! I do find that if I insert a coin rather than pressing a button that I'm more likely to play the entire game rather than pressing escape (which is what I used to do a lot). When playing a tournament it just feels "right".

Nope - I think your explanation was better. Are you a screenplay writer ? :)

Nah, just a strange man.

But I know what you meant.  Pressing a button doesn't have the same feeling.

My rules:

1)  It's my game, so it's my turn, you can play when I'm done

2)  I win, you lose.  If your score is higher its because a) the controller is broke, or b) the computer cheats or you cheat

3)  Fine, go home, I don't care.  You suck at this anyways!

Stratjakt,

;D Those rules are fine for HOME games but what if you are playing AWAY ????

Play any game until one person can't stand playing anymore (or because they're so drunk they can't score any points).

Also did a little web page to share screenshots of high scores with out-of-state frends and family. Each person got to pick a game, and we ended up with Dig Dug, Time Pilot, Berzerk, Asteroids and Robotron. We had originally just planned on sharing a common hiscore.dat but when I sent mine to a couple of guys they couldn't get it working right. Anyone successful at that?

Hey Tok - now you're talking ! A program that MERGES hiscore.dat files ! I presume like most people, the games you like/are good at just have your own name in them. Now if there was a program that could merge two hiscore.dat files together that would be sweet !

Now, either we've come up with an idea thats worth a $million or this has been posted before .......

Anyone ?

What we were going to do was put a common hiscore.dat file on the net and everyone would just D/L it every week. After a few weeks, everyones various highs and stuff should have been intermingled. I don't know the workings of the hiscore file, but for some reason that didn't work, even using the same versions of MAME.
I thought it was just a text file, but it's not.

Here is the slapped together page with our scores on it. Definitely need to clean it up and streamline it, but we're having a good time with it.
