try this http://www.woodweb.com/knowledge_base/Highgloss_finish_on_MDF.html
if your not looking for high gloss there is more finishing techniques in there

My steps:
1. Sand smooth with 220 grit
2. Prime with Kilz primer
3. Sand again with 220
4. light coat of Oil based semi gloss Rustoleum Painters touch
5. After a few hours, sand with 220
6. Repeat 4 and 5 as many times as you can stand it
7. Let dry for about a week
I use a gravity feed HVLP spray gun (http://www.homedepot.com/prel80HDUS/EN_US/diy_main/pg_diy.jsp?CNTTYPE=PROD_META&IRC=2&searchText=paint&CNTKEY=SuperFeatures2/Paint_and_Wall_Coverings/PD_Paint_0505&BV_SessionID=@@@@1234984680.1127017968@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccedaddfjmhkhhgcgelceffdfgidgln.0) hooked up to my air compressor. The finish is amazing.
I ended up with 14 coats on a friends MAME machine. I did about 6 coats on my Centipede restoration. (http://www.myuselessprojects.com/centipede/index.html)
