Title: Cocktail design
Post by: teef two on September 16, 2005, 09:49:33 am
This doesn't yet belong in project announcements as it may/may not happen for a while depending on other matters (a house move pending).

I've been working on this design for a bit in my spare time at work so everything was done in Visio. The design of the cabinet is not dis-similar to Crazy Canadians cocktail cabinet. I intend having interchangable panels which would be stored on the fourth side of the cocktail in a rack of some kind.

The monitor is to be a Hantarex 21 inch monitor from my previous upright (RIP)

I'd like to know what people think of the design and especially the control panels I have in mind.

The intention is to have the player one and two buttons permanently mounted on the body of the cab, not on the control panels themselves. Admin buttons, credit buttons etc. will similarly be mounted/hidden.

Not sure about bothering with a coin door. I know it adds to the authenticity but then again, it's going to take up much needed space within the body of the cab.

Looks good so far, but I would add support for a Tron configuration somehow, and perhaps an extra 4 buttons to the basic, if you like fighter games.

I thought about the extra buttons but fighters really aren't my thing. All the games I played in the arcades never required more than 3 butons so I don't think I will go down that route (feedback is appreciated though).

The tron configuration is a good idea but would have to come later on when I could get a proper trigger stick and extra spinner. I don't intend doing modular style panels (for which I'd just require a trigger stick), just complete ones. Something to think about though and could be designed now.

as for the fighters... realize that you will play a LOT of weirder games when friends come over...

"Cool, what game is it"
"Them all"
"Them all?"
<insert mame description>
"Cool! I used to play a weird game you've probably never heard of"
"try me"

... list I've heard so far... really!
Tron, Tempest  ... crap a few other super obvious ones I can't remember

Anyway...

"How about Street Fighter"
"Of course"
"That was my favorite... can we/"
"Sorry, I wanted to save 6 bucks of buttons on my 1000 machine... because".

"oh"

If your doing hotswap control panels though, you really should really have a fighter control panel.  You never know.

Okay it's a fair point. Although If I did say "six bucks" to my friends they'd rightly chastise me for talking like an American ;).
