Title: attack of the bees
Post by: missioncontrol on September 15, 2005, 02:58:17 pm
I went out to my shed to make sure I still had paint and also decide what else I'm going to do to my cabinet this weekend when I heard a buzzing sound in the cabinet....

It appears I've got a few nest from mud dauber bees inside there

If you're calling the same thing mud daubers that I call that, then they are actually wasps and are a lot more aggressive than bees. Go buy some raid flying insect killer. That stuff will knock 'em to the ground before they know what hit 'em. Having a bit of a wasp problem myself this year.

I really don't want to use a spray if I don't have to since wood is porous and it maight retain the chemicals

Okay, then get yourself a flute and lead them out of town like the Pied Piper.

The nest sounds like the ones that I call mud daubers, but the insect does not. These are more of a reddish color and will definitely sting you if you get too close.

here's what the nest look like:

from what I've found so far they are not supposed to be aggresive and rarely sting.

I think they are called Organpipe mud daubers, but the ones I've seen neer the nest look like the black and yellow mud daubers......

Having a bit of a wasp problem myself this year.

every year it's one type of bee or another that tries to control my yard....

wish I could find a way to eliminate them permanently......

Whatever you do, have someone video tape you doing it.

These are the mud buggers I get in my garage.  Just the house - I started to tap the nest to get one out, but then my camera went dead.  Looks similar to what you've got - anytime I see these, I just scrape them off the wall with a piece of scrap wood.  The bugs that come out of mine look just like wasps, but have never stung me.

If you're talking about the ones I think you are, the red wasps are paper wasps.
They're more agressive than mud daubers, partially because they're a communal insect. They form small colonies with a queen, sterile female workers, and mating insects. The workers have nothing to lose. They exist to service and protect the queen and her babies.
Title: Re: attack of the bees
Post by: Stingray on September 15, 2005, 04:15:02 pm
Paper wasps? Meaning that they make the paper looking wasps nests? If so, those aren't the ones I'm talking about either, though we do have those. They're commonly just called red wasps and they are super agressive and the sting is a lot more painful (I know I set you up there Chad). The ones I was talking about make a mud nest kind of like the nests pictured in this thread, but it's more of a dome shape. They're reddish colored, but they aren't as red as "red wasps".

In my last post I'm talking about two dofferent types of insects. One commonly called "mud daubers" at least here, the other are "red wasps". Neither of them are hornets. We have those too, and those were put on the planet Earth  specificly to give humans something to avoid. ;D

Clearly I've been misusing the term "mud dauber" my entire life. GIS reveals the bug that's bugging you, but I can't find the one I'm looking for. More research is in order.

It is indeed!

I have to give a presentation in 3 hours, then have some lunch, after lunch I have my salary review and then I only chew up another few hours and it's time to go home and attach myself to a case of VB.

Gotta love Fridays.

Excellent!  What's VB?  Is that your fav local brew?  Sounds good!  Or is it that red stuff we see in EVERY pic from your cab build post!   :D

Presentation and salary review?  Big day.  Hopefully the salary review goes well!  Tell them you need more money and want to work from home several days a week...

Indeed, I am talking about a diffrent insect.
This evil bastage, specifically... http://insects.tamu.edu/fieldguide/cimg348.html

Best experience with those was when one flew into my bedroom and tried to land in my torchiere lamp. And was roasted by 120 watts of incandescent lighting.
Was a rapid and very loud buzz for a few seconds as it panicked and thrashed dust out, then blissful silence as the fscker died.
I think the foul creature got caught under a light bulb. I don't remember the exact details post-roast. I know I plucked the filthy beast's carcass out and flushed it, though.

Me and wasps don't get along at all, for the record.

I've never seen an ACTUAL red wasp as far as I know.

I used to get those exact tube-looking things inside the windows of the house when I lived in NC.  Best thing to do is spray them.  Also, it's best after spraying a nest of a wasp to leave it up.  New wasps won't move in for some reason, and it removes a place for them to build a fresh and lethal dive-bombing hangar.  What I usually did (and this won't work for your situation) is let them fly away, and just dribble some of that spray all over the outside of the tube and soak it real good.  Evidently that Raid spray has some pretty wicked residual effects, because every once in a while I'd see some dead/dying in between the windows.

You could probably spray some Raid in a glass and soak a cotton ball in it.  Get the bottom of the tube REALLY good.  Those things DO creep the hell out of you, but I never got stung by 'em.  Dunno if that's cuz I Hong Kong Fooey-ed 'em, or if they were afraid of how toxic I was.

I took my kids to see the Wiggles live a couple years ago.  It was surreal.  Hundreds of moms and kids in the theater.  The moms were acting like they were rock stars.  At one point, they came out to the seats and were talking with the kids.  One mom behind me started crying and shaking like she was going to pass out.  Dude looked at her like she was psycho and walked away from us slowly.

You should be able to break them right off the side of the cabinet.  It's just made of mud.

The best part is that the wasps aren't there very much.  They build the 'nest' (it's not really a nest) a little at a time.  They find spiders and sting them.  Then they carry them to the nest, and lay their eggs on them, and encase them in mud (which hardens to what you see).  The eggs hatch, and spend their time eating the spiders while they're still alive.

the wiggles made 49 million dollars last year. they ARE rock stars. and smart too. 'the cockroaches' bones alluded to was the band a couple of the guys were in before 'the wiggles'. the cockroaches had one minor hit. in an interview, they said that as the wiggles they have the advantage that the demographic they cater to is refreshed every year or so. now thats smart.

There is a difference between being rich and successful, and having women cry and shake when you come near.  The Wiggles should not be sex symbols.
