Title: Game donations for a handicapped kid.
Post by: Stingray on September 14, 2005, 11:28:57 am
My wife is an elementary school teacher. At her school there is a really great kid named Tyler who is permanently confined to a wheelchair. He's in the 6th grade this year, but he's at about a 2nd or 3rd grade level mentally. I'm not sure if he's expected to stay at that level for the rest of his life, or if improvenment is expected. In any case this is a super nice kid I'm talking about here. The family is very poor, there are a couple of other kids who are both normal. In any case my wife and I try to help them out from time to time when we can.

Which brings me to why I called you here today. :)

Talking to Tyler, I discovered that he's a big video game fan. Sadly, all he has is a Sega Genesis. Clearly I could not let this stand. I had an old PS2 that I wasn't using so I gave that & a couple games to the family. If any of you guys have some PS2 games that you're not playing any more, I'm sure Tyler would love to have them. Feel free to PM me or email stingrayg4 (at) gmail (dot) com

Edit
After Gozur brought up the point about non-PS2 games I've edited the title of this thread. If you have a system you'd like to donate that would also be greatly appreciated.

Is this limited to just PS2 games? If someone has a spare other system would that also be cool to send for the kid?

Goz, that would be fantastic. I'm sure he'd love to have anything that came his way.

Also I guess I should mention that despite the fact that walking is not possible for Tyler, his manual dexterity seems to be more or less normal so special controllers are not needed for him. In any case, he can use a standard Genny controller and seemed to have no problem with a Dualshock.

Good point Game Over, PS1 games would be great.

Oh and to avoid possible overlap, I guess I should mention that the games I already gave him are Army Men: Air Attack 2 and Jak & Daxter.

Tell me what system you would like and I'll send any that I have.  I don't have current gen systems, but I think you have an idea of what I do have.  Let me know, I'll get something packed up with games and sent out.

Anything that you aren't using and would like to pass along would be great Chad. Thanks for the offer.

Although I'm not sure how crazy he would be about very old systems, but maybe he's a classic fan and I just don't kow it yet. I guess I should find out.

See what you can find out.  If he needs something reasonably current, I could send out an N64 or a PS1.

The PS2 will play PS1 games, but an N64 would be cool. I think I have a few N64 games that I can toss in.

You got it.  I have a stack of N64s sitting idle.  I'll clean one up, throw in what games I can, and send it along.  Is there an upper age rating for the games you want?

I'm not sure how many good N64 controllers I have, though.  Most of the ones you get at yard sales have a totally played out analog stick.

Good point. We're talking about a kid who's essentially about 8 or 9 years old developmentally. You're a parent, so probably you can just use your own judgement. If it's okay for your kids it's probably okay for Tyler. Obviously I want to avoid gory/ graphic/ explicit language stuff.

I'm not sure how many good N64 controllers I have, though.  Most of the ones you get at yard sales have a totally played out analog stick.

If you don't have a good one I may have a spare. I'll have to look. Maybe somebody else can donate a good N64 controller.

Is he capable of playing reasonably complex games, or should we stick with real kiddo stuff like Tigger's Honey Hunt?

And would some Genesis games be in order as well?  If we can get some list of what is going to him, I could probably kick in games for systems that other people are sending.  Some systems I have literally dozens of dups of games.

Quote

He can play sports games or so he tells me, which are usually somewhat complex. He's not having any problems with Jak & Daxter or Army Men so I don't think that he's super limited. Somehow I doubt he'd be able to handle a really complex RPG or something of that nature. Again, probably a judgement call. If you think a 'normal' 8-12 year old kid can play it, then Tyler probably can handle it.

Oh and one more point that just occured to me. I'm not trying to be a glory hog or anything. I'll be giving everyone full credit for the stuff they donate when I give it to Tyler. I'll be sure to tell him "This came from Chad in MA" changing the name & location when appropriate. I haven't told him or the family anything about this yet though. I didn't want to get thier hopes up in case nothing happened with it. Looks like several people are already expressing interest in donating though. This is working out great so far.

Credit isn't relevant to me so don't worry about it.  I don't do things like this for gratuity, I do them because it can make someone's day a little better.

Take a look back at the Genesis question I added, took me a while to get that in there and you responded in the meantime.

Genesis games may be good too. Let me check with him and find out what he already has and ask if he's interested in more.

does he have an old computer, at least a PII?  someone can send him a bunch of nes/sega/snes roms and emulators on a cd if he doesn't have the internet or only dialup.  i have about 20 NES games, but i don't know if kids these days could take blowing on games 100 times.

i also have a few N64 games i wouldn't mind getting rid of.  is DK64 only playable with the expansion pack cause i want to keep that.

-DK64 (if compatible), rampage world tour and rampage universal tour, bomberman hero, nfl qb club '98, banzjo kazooie (the mindless collecting killed me) and some others

As far as I know the family does not own a computer of any kind, but I'm not sure, I'll have to ask.

Since Chad is donating an N64, any carts for that system that you would like to contribute will be great. PM me for shipping info.

I'll take a look to see what DC games I have lying around.  Would his parents care if you gave them CDRs?  DC games are floating all over the net.
Title: Re: Game donations for a handicapped kid.
Post by: Stingray on September 19, 2005, 09:44:42 am
I would very seriously doubt that his parents would have a problem with CDRs. I doubt that they are even aware that there's any kind of issue with that.

So, pretty much, you should be able to hit some torrent sites and download any DC game you can find that is appropriate.  You should probably make him a self booting NES emu disc, too.  Between that, and the stuff we've already got coming over, this kid will be well stocked.

For a kid of that mental level, I highly recommend the following games for the N64 (sorry I don't have any):

Mario 64
Banjo and Kazooie
Banjo Tooie

I'm hoping someone will donate those Ray, I agree they would be good choices. I do have Mario 64, but it's one of my favorite games, so I'm afraid I'm just not wiling to part with that one.

GameOver- Your package of games arrived last night. Thanks!

I don't know if I should give this stuff to Tyler as it comes in, or if I should wait until I have a big pile of stuff and give it to him all at once. What do you guys think?

Oh, and as it turns out, Tyler is a big fan of fighters, so if anyone has one or two they're willing to part with that would be great!

Only just noticed this thread.

I have some Dreamcast games I'd gladly donate but I'm not sure if they'll play in a US Dreamcast...I'm guessing not without a swap-disc.  Let me know if there is a solution...I can't remember off hand what games I have except Tomb Raider & Jet Set Radio.

I think I remember that if you copy one, you can change the region code on it.  I have never tried it myself but I'm pretty sure I remember that, and it does stand to reason that it could be done simply.

Most worthwhile DC games can be downloaded and burned easily anyway.

I will start burning games tonight. I will add a list to the thread before shipping. If I leave off any must have games let me know and they will be added prior to shipping.

[edit]
So far I've burnt about 25 CD's and am only up to Crazy Taxi 2 working alphabetically.

Any new interest in this? A lot of people seemed interested in sending stuff, but only a couple actually did, at least so far.

Every time I see him he reiterates to me that he likes fighters and "adventure" games. I'm not sure if by adventure he means platformers or maybe something along the lines of ICO/ Beyond Good & Evil/ Tomb Raider. I'm thinking I may go out and buy him a game or two today at lunch. I'm not a big fighter fan, what's a good one on the PS2?

On the subject of what is or isn't appropriate, any games that I get that I'm not familiar with, I'll be sure and let his parents know that I don't know if it's a good game for kids and just let them make the call. These are really good people and they're very appreciateive of everything we've done for them. I don't think they'll get mad if a game that they think he shouldn't be playing slips through.
