Title: Windows XP Pro not the Corp Version
Post by: fastredpacman on September 14, 2005, 01:39:59 am
Was wondering if anyone has one they can part with cheaply. Ive tried eBay and craigslist with no luck. I just want one to install in my cab and wanna be able to update it, that's why I'm looking for one that isn't the corporate version.

Corporate edition updates fine.  I am up to date and am using the Corp version.  ;)

Silly question, but WHY would the operating system in your cabinet ever need updating?

If it is plugged into a network, it could be vulnerable to attack. I intend to hook mine up to a network, so it can run mp3s off of my server (jukebox), and I can update the other software on it via the network rather than having a DVD drive installed.

Until Joe Dork wants to play Half Life and puts his computer into the DMZ when he can't figure out how to open ports.

I only have two computers and I am sacrificing one for the cabinet. So I need to update it because it will be on the internet. So I wanna make sure I can get a Windows Xp Pro cd, not the upgrade Windows Xp Pro, or the corporate version, but the actual complete install with the activation intact.

I have the corporate version installed on my entire network and every PC updates itself just fine.

Get XP home.  You can map to it/share/whatever you need.  Also, AutoUpdates work great on it.

If XP Pro is too expensive, then put 2000 Pro on it.

Luck,
-D

btw, you should really find a good firewall instead of worrying about updating your cabinet.

a good firewall will prevent all troubles before they are troubles...

Well, until he downloads Nero from a bittorrent site, installs it, and ends up with more adware/spyware than he could possibly clean.

Unfortunately, a missed update on another computer in the internal network (that's used for web browsing, downloading, etc.) can still put all computers on the LAN at risk. Firewalls only block what's not allowed, and most effective exploits these days use normally open ports in conjunction with an exploit/bug.

Buy this one from divemaster!! The only difference between the update and the full version is that you have to have a previous version of windows for the update to work. It does not have to be installed on  the computer. You can do a new install on a clean HD, and it will ask you to insert your previous version of windows. At that time you just put the disk/cd in the drive, it reads it and sees that you do have a previous copy, and then installs the full version of WinXP. Once it is installed it takes updates the same way as any other version of WinXP.

Hope this helps, Patrick

Another silly question, but why not use a Linux install?

Cost? Nothing, zero, zilch, nada, nill, zero.

The only thing Linux is lacking is Mamewah, but Advancemenu is pretty good.

http://www.gentoo.org/       -- Best damn distro ever made, but requires a little more work at first.

P.S.  If this is thread poisoning.  mods feel free to delete my post.

OS updates and firewalls wouldnt prevent adware, so thats a moot point.

and as a side comment  OMFG MY ROMZ GOT DA HAXX0RED!!! WTF BBQ

sorry, just had to

One of us is going to hack into your cab, replace all of your roms with Chiller, and put so much gay porn on it you'll become a raging, rampaging homosexual.

Any machine on the net is a potential victim, especially a windows box.

On the subject of a firewall not preventing adware, that is true, but once the adware is there, it spreads itself by downloading more apps and installing them, often leaving you no alternative but to wipe the drive and start over.

There are adwares out there that none of those can touch, that can really only be removed manually.  That is why things like HiJackThis exist.

It will give you  dump of various parts of your system, reg entries, security settings, things like that.  A person can then manually review them and remove things that do not belong there.

The best way to ensure you're getting a linux-compatible modem is to get an external.
