Hey Guys,
has anyone tried modding there gamecube with mod chips? new shells for the casing?
Just trying to get some reviews from peoplw who have done it.
-
Quite a while back someone posted a pre-preoduction shot (might have actually just been a 3D render) of a new upper shell to allow regular sized DVDs to be used. It looked great, but I don't recall there being a release date. Has anyone seen a date for that product? I've heard precious little about the mod chip. Seemed really exciting when it was announced, but interest quickly went away. Haven't heard much since then.
So, I'm also interested in hearing from someone who has experience modding the 'cube.

I think the new case for full size dvd-r's is out already. I'm pretty sure I have seen people selling systems with it, so yeah...
I really want to get a Qoob chip, but am a terrible solderer :(

Here's a good site for premodded consoles, although it's more expensive than doing it yourself (I wouldn't try, I would screw it up):
http://www.modchipman.com/premodded-gamecube-p-440.html
They sell modchips and full size DVD cases.
-
$134 pre-modded sounds like a great deal to me. Even the extra $50 for the case mod doesn't seem too far out of line.

It's $134 for the GCN including modchip installation, but the modchip is an additional cost, so they're charging $35 for installation.
-
I took this to mean that the chip cost was built into the $134:
What's Included
*brand new gamecube (platinum)
*one gamecube controller
*gamecube a/v cables and ac adapter
*manuals
*your choice of modchip pre-installed into the system (choose your chip from the option below)
*30 day modchip install warranty (we'll replace the chip if it goes bad within 30 days of receipt)
If it isn't, that site is very misleading IMO.

Yeah but its common sense. How is he supposed to make any money if he sold modded cubes for $135 when the cube is $100+$$ for the chip+installation.
-
I really want a modded Gamecube now :(
-
Yeah, a cube new is $99 and the cheapest chip is $40.
-
Do you have a link for the hard drive development? I'd be interested in seeing what's going on with that.

Here's a link to a post about GC hard drive development:

I haven't read through the whole thing, but I think they're trying to get the cube to talk to an IDE HDD via USB.

There are several Full size DVD cases out now...
-
www.teamxecuter.com makes one. They're one of the most respected groups in the Xbox hacking scene.

I'm not involved in the Gamecube mod scene, so could someone briefly explain what any of this will actually do for you? What kind of features does this mod add to your cube?
-
It lets you play backups (read: stolen games). You can either burn them on 3" DVD-R media, which is generally used in certain camcorders for people who want to pop the disc straight from their camcorder into their DVD player. Or, if you get a replacement case you can copy games from a Gamecube 3" disc onto a plain-jane 5" DVD-R and play it in your Gamecube. The advantage of this is that 5" discs are a lot cheaper than 3" discs. The replacement cases are otherwise the same size as the stock case that came with your Gamecube. There is just no longer any plastic preventing a standard-sized disc from fitting.
-
By using a bigger disc is there a chance of ruining the laser?

Really don't think so. But if the motor/spindle was made for mini dvdr's only the extra weight of a full size dvd might take a little off the life of the motor bearings.

Could you not do the same with a steady hand and rotary tool? Might look ugly but saves money.
-
Yes, as long as you didn't mess with the switch that tells the Gamecube that the case lid is closed. And actually, I think that the mod-chip might trick the Gamecube into thinking that the lid closed anyway, so maybe it wouldn't even matter. I'm just speculating, really. I've never done it and haven't read all that much about it.

The track of the laser can still only go so far, so no, it can't really damage it. You'll never be able to use the outermost 2gigs (or whatever) of the regular sized dvds though. It essentially just lets you use regular DVDs AS mini-DVDs

How is the cube at snes emus?
-
arent they selling for 80 now? i thought? or less?
and isnt there a memory card mod/conver that allows you to actualy write full games on?
by the way that case above is awesome, i bought a 2nd cube off ebay painted gold, to use on trips with a monitor... would be sweet as hell if someone could design a mini arcade cab for it... lol!
