Title: Jamma harness - Right way up ?
Post by: fazz on September 13, 2005, 08:59:13 am
Hi

Im a very ignorant newbie.  Just bought a 4 button 2player jamma cab and intend on using it to run mame the easy way with a jpac and arcade vga but replacing all buttons and doing up the cab with new art etc

I have bought an original 10 yard fight board though just to test my cab and so i can use it while saving for the other gubbins.  There are several posts warning to ensure things are connected the right way up to the jamma harness.  How do i know which is the chip side and which is the solder side so to speak.  And if i connect it upside down will it do any damage.  As the board cost me

Sorry I understood what solder and chip side meant on the board but not how i identify which side is which on the harness connector inside the cabinet.

If the harness isn't labeled then you will have to follow a couple of wires to determine which side is which.

Like Gozer said, if your harness has the key (at H and 7) then you know which way is which.

Tracing wires is the only way to figure it out initially.
You will PROBABLY have two "fork-solders" on the end that connects to the shorter of the two sets of edge connectors.
The first two connectors on each end of the harness are ground.
The 3rd and 4th on the short end are +5v.

Once I KNOW which way's which on a given harness, I always mark mine with a permanent marker, to show where the key should be.
After it's marked like, it's easy to line it up quickly and confidently.

To add a bit to this:

black wires generally signify ground, red +5V and yellow +12V.  You should be able to see on the board that the power traces mainly center around the ground and the +5V.  Ground can be difficult on a JAMMA board as there are grounds on both ends!  However, +5V is right next to the ground, and you should see that it forks everywhere.  If it doesn't, then you're looking at the player 2 controls, and power is at the other end.
