Title: Processor Question
Post by: chris2922 on September 12, 2005, 04:07:01 pm
Im about to purchase some hardware to build a cocktail cab around.

I have a few processor questions though.

Given the choice between AMD and Intel processors, has the MAME community found one to be more suitable than the other, or are they so similar it doesn't matter which one i chose?

To save money i had considered a Celeron 2.5ish.  Would the lack of cache be a major drawback for good emulation under MAME?

Thanks...

I'm running a "classics" cab on a PII 400, and that does me just fine.

My personal PC is an AMD Duron 1.6Ghz, and it plays all of the games happily.

2.5Ghz, cache or no, probably won't have any problems playing anything.

I've tried MAME on various systems ranging from PII-400 to P4 3.2 also with the AMD counterparts.  It really doesn't make any real difference.  Just get whatever you are able to get for free or cheap  :D

the 2.5 celeron will be plenty of juice for any MAME game, or NES, or even SNES if you want.

If I were to generalize what I see here (http://benchmark.mameworld.net/database.html), I'd say an AthlonXP with the bench1280 settings with mame 0.68 will give you the best overall performance.

Since there are no Duron samples there oyu really can't compare with a Celeron.

However, it is my opinion that anything above 1.5mhz AMD or Pentium is enough for most of what you'll ever play in mame.

Now, other emulators, that is a different story....

If you can afford, I'd recommend dual-core ... may be worth a little more in a few months ...
