Last week I launched Xevious in MAME but didn't start playing for about 15 minutes. When I did start, there was a "wall" of those spinning mirrors coming at me. I had MANY extra ships and over 800,000 points. After the mirrors killed me, on my next life I was playing "as usual" but every enemy I shot granted me an extra life.
Clearly something went buggy but the problem is the bogus high score was saved by my highscore.dat.
How can I clear that out? I don't see any way to do it in the TAB menu and F2 does not bring up any menus.

I think you are little confuse :-\
Highscore.DAT file does not save scores. It only provides information to save score, but it is true that without highscore.DAT file you can not save score in most of games.
Just look for a folder name (HI) in your mame directory and delete specific game file you want to remove.
Neogeo games used (NVRAM) folder for saving scores.
thats it. :)
