Title: Tiki-Cade: another little addition or 2
Post by: quarterback on September 10, 2005, 02:29:50 pm: Hey y'all. About 9 months ago I made a "pre announcement" and a call for help regarding my proposed "Tiki Cade".

I haven't had a lot of time to work on the artwork or aesthetic parts of the project (forgive the temporary marble-shelf-paper on the CP), so there was really no point in me posting in here. Over that time period I have reconfigured my CP a couple times, cleaned out all the old wiring, hooked up a variety of parts, gotten new joysticks and buttons in the 'correct' palette (orange, red, yellow) but I've finally made a move on the 'tiki cade' portion of my tiki-cade and thought I'd post a picture.

And I guess I felt like I had to get moving on it after I saw the "Bat Cade" and the shameless theft of my flame-lamp idea (j/k)

As you can see from the photo, I've added my bamboo or, what I like to call, my "B-Molding" :) I've also photoshopped in my proposed marquee, although I haven't done any work on that in 9 months either.

Anyway, here's the pic for those who might be interested. Expect an update in the next 6 months or so :D

I have to be honest, I like the heavily themed cabinets a lot more then the standard run-of-the-mill "authentic" ones. One suggestion, it would be great to see the control panel done in vertical bamboo strips rather then the faux marble. Have fun!

No way! themed cabs are fun, but can't hold a candle to 'authentic'. Just my personal opinion!!! 8)

Excellent idea! I know they make 'reed' type blinds, you can get them at most home improvement centers. Something like that would make a great CPO for your cab! Nice work on the bamboo. Looking forward to the next update.

True, but I have to say that cutting the slots in the bamboo proved to be more demanding than I thought.

Two of the pieces attached to the side (in the picture) are just sliced in half, but the rest of the stuff only has about 25% cut out of it (a 90-degree cut, leaving a 270-degree diameter), and the two pieces on the right and left side of the marquee have slots cut into them, so the tops and bottoms of each piece is still completely round.

It's totally one of those situations where having the proper tools would have made it much easier.

Those are prop torches. Not real fire. ;)

Yeah, I'm pretty sold on a printed arcade CP with no plexi, but I do have some artwork in the works...

It's funny how amazingly different the cab looks without the black sides. Now I really feel like I need to do the whole front (and all the other painted-black parts with the bamboo as well, while originally I was only going to do the sides.

I'm actually thinking about a difft name for it and losing the "cade" part. Not because people here hate the "cade" suffix (and they do), but because I'm kinda wanting it to look like it's a REAL game. Some kind of fictional game with the Tiki theme... Escape from Skull Island or something like that...

... but my first point of business is to rework the torches. They're cool and all, but have two major downsides (1) They're battery operated and (2) they're REALLY REALLY LOUD!!!

I figure I can rig up a power source from my PC's power supply without too much difficulty, but the little fans that make the "flame" wiggle are just horribly loud. I'm pondering some kind of PC Fan & ductwork system that blows air out a tube that runs out through the side of the cab and into the torch... but I haven't quite figured it out yet and the simpler it is, the more likely it'll get done.

As always, it's a work in perpetual progress.
