Title: Wiring a coin mech to a computer PSU
Post by: eggedd2k on September 05, 2005, 08:48:44 am
i've got a sentinel coin mech - 12v. Would it be possible to power this from a computer psu? how would you ensure you get 12v?

The yellow wire on a PC PSU is +12V. I'm not sure if you need to know more than that... someone here will be able to tell you.

how do you physically wire it to the 12v on the computer's PSU? do you have to take the case off the PSU to do this?

You should be ablr to just tap off of the Yellow (+12v) and the Black (Ground) from the Hard Drive power connectors.

You could use some insulated disconeects like these that i used:-

Also, this site has some info on wiring the sentinal mech, including dip switch settings.

I used a molex hard drive cable. Plug into the PSU harness and then cut the connector off the other end. Extend the yellow and the black wire next to it (pin 1 and 2) to your destination and hook up with quick-disconnects as mentioned. Tape off, remove, or cap wires 3 and 4.

I do something like this but I cut all four wires and extend then to a wiring bus. Then, if i need  +12, +5 or Ground in the future, I just tap off of the bus. You can then use the quick disconnects between the bus and your application.

**WARNING**
Use a multimeter first to determine which wire is 12v. Not all manufacturers use the same color codes. Most do, but there ARE some that reverse it. Though I suppose it won't hurt anything if you accidentally apply 5v instead of 12....

I'm not sure it's a really spectacular idea for you to be poking around inside an arcade machine. If you see something that looks like a suction cup, don't touch.

I made a cable to tap off of a hard drive power plug.

I started with a HD power splitter cable.  One branch, I removed the molex plug and soldered on a length of wire to the 12v and GND wires.

To the other end of the extension wire, I soldered 6 pairs of 12v / GND wires with QD terminals:
