Hey all,
I just starting mucking about with Daemon Tools and Alcohol 52 because I thought it would be cool to be able to play the old X-wing games on my cab (with N-64 controllers for the analog stick).
Anyway, I used the above software to copy the disc and mount it to a virtual drive.
The original X-wing works great but X-wing Versus Tie Fighter always "realizes" that the CD is not in the drive and asks for it.
What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you need a "no cd crack" or something along those lines. I don't know much about it; it is a form of copyright protection that prevents copies of original games from running. Assuming you own the original game and just want a more convenient way to run it; try making the image with a tool designed for such things like Alcohol 120% or CloneCD, then mount the image in Daemon tools or whatever and give it a try. There is a ton of information (including message boards such as http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=80) on the net about getting around the various forms of copy protection on game discs in order to make backups. You could start with a few Google searches I suppose.

This is exactly what I did. It's not working.
Patches? Settings? Where am I going wrong?

Well, a "no cd crack" is one possible option as well as different copying/burning techniques for that particular game or form of copyright protection on your game; being another option. You will have to research it. I would check out forums and do some Google searches like "X-wing Versus Tie Fighter" "no cd crack"; or "Backup X-wing Versus Tie Fighter"; something along those lines.

This Googling brings up a lot of scary, pop-up infested BS. Anyone have a reliable source for no-cd patches?

Not sure about XvT (dang I need to dust off those discs) But alot of older games greated an *.ini file with the CD drive letter. You may need to edit that INI. I have done this on several games including Riven, MYST 3 and others.

In Daemon tools, check out the different security options. Diablo II, for example, needs 'securom' turned on in the options menu.
