Anybody know how Bob Roberts is making out with hurricane Katrina?
-
I hope he is ok, I plan on ordering my Hv diode soon.
-
As I recall he is in the north part of Louisiana...Monroe I *think*. The worst he will get there is rain and some hail. For some reason Monore always gets hail.
-d
-
nope, huricanes don't stop at the coast. They are warning of power outages even north of tennesee as winds are high enough to uproot trees.
-
No, he lives in Gretna, LA, which is south of New Orleans, across the river.
-
My first thought when I heard the name of this hurricane was...
Katrina and the Waves... :P
(but there won't be any Walking On Sunshine)
-
Good luck to Bob and his family...
(although I already heard there're people died in this weather....)
Hope no more people get hurt !!!!
-
I'm glad to hear he made it out. Google Mapped Gretna before the hurricane hit and was defintely worried about him. It seems doubtful he's gonna have anything left, but I'm sure glad he was smart enough to get his family out.
-
Well, it looks like the winds have died down.
Google news stories are abundant now. The death toll is reaching the hundreds, with damages estimated at US$25 Billion dollars.
http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=katrina&btnG=Search+News
Rescue crews are already working hard to find stranded people, putting the living first, and worrying about identifying the dead later.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected.
-
I thought he was in Laufiette (big sp?) which was flooded. Not from the levi break, but before that it had flooded parts.
-
Layfette is to the west of New Orleans by a fair distance. It also is very much a costal city/port. However, it does not share N.O's feature of needing levies.

-
He lives in GRETNA.
(link to online Map removed)
Looks pretty close to N.O.
Can anyone compare this map perhaps to a map of the affected area(s)?
-
I've been watching the web stream, and it was mentioned that since school will be closed until December at the earliest, they will be making provisions to allow for the enrollment of the children into the school system in Lafayette parish.
From the sounds of it, Lafayette pulled through ok, otherwise that offer couldn't be extended.

Sorry folks, but Bob lives about 5 MILES from New Orleans.
Keep your fingers crossed.
-
I really hope he is ok.
Prices might go up when he comes back. But i wont mind. He will have a lot of bills to pay. And im sure all of us will want to give back. Buying or not from him if he starts selling again.
-
being 5 miles away is pretty much the same as 20+ miles away. No levee floods but got hit by the hurrican all the same. Lots of trees down. Lots of damage. And probably some inital flooding... but it should have gone back down.
but 5 miles from NO he might have some real issues with getting food, water, looters, ect.
I still have a very good friend which we talked to the night before the levee. He was in my aunt nancy's house 4 blocks from one of the levees. He was talking about how they made it past the flooding... Then the next morning... I'm sure he was in for a suprise. Knowing Andrew, I could see him trying to swim to his girlfriends house if she wasn't spending the night...
-
for a visual reference:
-
If you look at Google Earth, it appears (And I'm no expert on the canals and rivers there) that Gretna is seperated from New Orleans proper by the Mississippi river. Gretna's south of the river, New Orleans proper is north.
And even if the flooding was only briefly, there's no electricity. It's sealed off. Mold is gonna sprout quickly under those conditions.
And it doesn't have to even be flooding from the ground. As anyone who's been through a major hurricane knows, roof damage from wind will ruin the inside of a house too. Even wind just blowing the shingles off and exposing the plywood.

At least most looters would look at boxes full of pushbuttons and pcbs and think ???

I don't get a great feeling of relief looking at Bob's web status entry. Does anyone else see from the way this is worded that he may have stayed? Please tell me I'm wrong and there's something there saying he got out early.

Things will be delayed for a few days as hurricane Katrina has it's eye on New Orleans! Unlike her little brother Ivan, she is on a more direct path right at us! Mandatory evacuations started this morning with Plaquemines Parish followed by several others, along with voluntary evacuation for New Orleans, which will most likely be upgraded to mandatory this evening. Stores are closed & boarded up at this point, as well as, many gas stations which have run out of gas. Alice & I have been devoting our time to hurricane preparedness, so email, orders, notifications & such are delayed, but I will try to square up everything pre-Katrina since she will no doubt be responsible for power outages for several days after we have weathered her wrath.
Incredibly, all roads lead out of New Orleans at this time with zero roads in... and it looks like the contraflow traffic plan is a great success, alleviating the bumper to bumper exodus of Ivan's evacuation.
-
A better link to where the flooding is.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4207202.stm
Show how anyone across the mississippi escaped any flooding caused by the lake.
Hopefully most of the looting is on the other side of the river from Bob.

I've been worried about him as well and just noticed this thread. I grew up in Lafayette and lived in NO for a few years. By the grace of God I now live in Dallas. We're getting 25,000 refugees today in Dallas.
-
I spent four years down south ('83-'87), in the Alabama/Georgia/Florida "tri-state" area, and do NOT miss the weather at all.
I'll take my current situation, complete with an active volcano 45 miles from my house, over going back to the tornadoes and hurricanes anyday.
I was an air traffic controller in the Army at the time, and got to watch tornadoes go by a few miles out, while sitting in a 100 ft. tall tower.
Yep, THAT was exciting.
We had to wait for the "tower top" winds to exceed 60 m.p.h. before we could put the radios on remote, and abandon the tower.
Then there was the tornado that picked up the entire roof of a supermarket 3 blocks from my house, and dropped it back down inside the store.
Fortunately, I was in the tower watching a different one at the time.
I loved the people I met down there, but the weather had me ready to "get out of Dodge" at the first available opportunity...and I DID.
I'm keeping the people down there in my prayers, as well.

Jeez. After rereading that, it kinda does sound like he stayed there. That was posted on Saturday. You'd think if he was about to leave, he'd have mentioned that as opposed to hurricane preparedness:(

i live (lived) in Metairie, bordering N.O. to the west and am in Baton Rouge now.
Baton Rouge is located 60 miles or so west of New Orleans and 80-90% of homes lost power here. Most of the damage in Baton Rouge was caused by downed trees. Power has not been restored in all of Baton Rouge yet
Gretna looks looks like it was spared flooding of the kind that New Orleans got from the Lake, but the wind damage (trees and debris) was at least equivalent to what New Orleans received.
On the other hand, the mayor allowed the people stranded in N.O. to cross the river to look for food and water, and some of them decided to turn to violence and looting and burned down the Oakwood mall right across the river.
Power may not be up in the Greater New Orleans area for at least a month from now (in the dry areas).
Good luck on receiving your items to finish your projects.
I finished my cabinet 2 days before the hurricane hit and am hoping that it was spared

Oh God I thought I was the only one who was thinking that when I heard the hurricane's name. Durn infectious 80s music.

I think those Google map shots are old pictures...
I have an order to place for some leaf switch button assemblies. Bob Roberts, are you OK?

If you look at that map, you're looking at the "Katrina" photos that were taken "on Wednesday, August 31 at 10 am"
-
Has anyone heard from Bob?
-
I hope he is OK. But the sad part is even if he is perfectly healthy, unless he is staying with family with Internet, we may not hear from him in a while.
Not to mention if he is OK, he is probably a little more concerned with his house, friends, and future than this forum.
Come back and see us Bob!

That's great news. Bob, if you're out there, hope all is well!

Yeah, I heard on the radio this morning that Gretna is allowing residents back in this morning. Hope Bob & his home are both safe.
