Title: Robotron pre and post speed adjustment
Post by: TOK on August 28, 2005, 08:07:09 pm
Has anyone played both versions and could comment on the speed change?
I think it was at version .92 that it was edited to emulate the slower video blitter of the original.

I have a .84 set of ROMs. Just want to see if it's worth the upgrade.
Do I need to upgrade both MAME and the ROM, or will my current one work with .99?
I really don't update my version of MAME or the ROM's much since I mostly play the oldies.

Think this topic is OK, since I'm not asking for a source for ROM's etc.

You'll have to upgrade your ROMset as well.  Added PROMs came with the blitter work.

Thanks Peale. Does the mod make the game noticably easier?

yes... but only when there are tons of guys on the screen.  It doesn't seem noticiable for the first 4-5 screens... but when there are 100s on at a time, you can make it to the edge easier for sure.

Thanks Lilwolf. I've been putting off upgrading it, but getting tired of getting smoked  at the tanks or shortly after.

Cool, I may need to play again soon.  I broke one of my 8 ways and have been lazy about fixing it.  Gotta beat that high score and any edge would help.    :)

I've got a multiwilliams cabs running advmame .99 and a real robotron.

Both are setup the exact same settings.

High score on the mame, 146000.

High score on the real deal  253000.

The speed difference really gets to you around the first tank wave.
On the real machine I can get by it on one life, on the mame machine, its HARD!!!!

The tanks are usually where things start going south for me too. I've broken into the 300,000's on the original, and my high on the .84 MAME version is right around yours. No matter how good I'm doing, I'm usually done 1 or 2 screens past the tanks. That first screen without the border is brutal.

I've obtained the updated ROM, but haven't migrated it over to my cab yet. I installed .99 on my cab for Golden Tee 3D, and left .84 intact since that has been my  main cab setup for over a year. I'll be able to play both versions back to back this way, so it should be fun to compare!

Huge difference. By my second game, I was over 240,000. I had never made it to the "2084" screen in the MAME version at default settings, and I did so repeatedly in the new version. That feels MUCH better.

Thanks for the info guys!

Yeah, I just upgraded the Robotron set and created a list in mamewah with just Robotron in order to play it at a decent speed.  I love it.  It's amazing how much better it is.  Everyone must ditch the old Mame version :police: (just run the new version for this game only--I hate upgrading entire sets ;)).

Cheers,

btw, you don't really need to update your roms when you update mame.

And you don't need to only run one version of mame.

Get a good frontend... that can launch multiple mame version (and only shows up the games that you have roms for).

GREAT for people who use analog+ mame for some games, and nonamemame for others... and the latest mame for robotron :)
