Title: Genesis emulator with gamepad interface only
Post by: KenToad on August 28, 2005, 01:54:35 pm
I've been playing around a lot with several genesis emulators, namely gens, gensfe, mcgens, gens plus, and kega fusion (made the screen go crazy w/Castlevania Bloodlines).  So far as I can tell, none of these emulators has the ability to remap functions like exit and save/load game to a gamepad.

Given the fact that I'm exclusively using two GP-Wiz 49's in my cab, do you think there are any well-functioning genesis emulators out there that might let me control the emulator with a gamepad?

Cheers,
KenToad

Okay, maybe I'll just have to go with joytokey once again.  That makes both vpinball and gens the lucky winners of this year's lack of configurability award ;)

Try fixing your Castlevania problem and use Fusion.

Give MESS a try.  I use it to play Genesis games and have had no problems whatsoever.

Yeah, Minwah, I think Zophar's Domain gave me an older version of the emulator ... should have just checked the main page.  I guess I was wondering why Jcrouse only has Mamewah ini's for fusion if it wasn't fully playable with all the good games.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that.  Thanks Todd H.  I'll give it a go.

Sorry to bang on, but I highly recommend the latest build of Fusion...it's cabinet friendly, supports Genesis, 32X, Sega CD, GameGear, Master System (& more), supports ArcadeVGA modes...and is accurate and fast.

It's great  :)

Please bang on.  Actually, I think Fusion is one of those emulators that assumes you're using the joystick axes when you choose gamepad controls.  That would be fine in most cases, but for me I want to use a modular panel that is hooked up through the GP-Wiz 49.  I have the directions on the super joysticks on the modular panel set up to be button inputs on the GP-Wiz 49.  The emulator only asks me what I want the ABCXYZ buttons to be.  Oh well.

I've had nothing but success with Gens, though.  I assume the ini file for Mamewah is similar?  I have it set up and working in pre-1.6 version of Mamewah.

Cheers,

Are you sure?  I'm sure I was asked for up/down/left/right inputs too...but then I'm not using pc joystick inputs.  Worth putting a request on the Fusion board if this is the case - the author Steve Snake has been very good to us cabinet users in the past...

It is similar IIRC, but you don't need the -fullscreen switch that Fusion requires.

Minwah,

I just tested the latest build of Fusion (3.4) and I can confirm that if you're using a gamepad interface, you're definitely limited to the joypads axes for your directional controls.  I tested with an adaptoid and that was particularly bad since there was no way to map away from the terrible N64 analog joystick.

I'll try setting up Gens in the latest beta of Mamewah tonight, hopefully, and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the help.

Cheers,
KenToad

Try http://www.screenshotarchive.com/downloads_emus.htm.

GensFE is modified for ESC to QUIT. Save/Load is not customizable though.

Yeah, go with GensFE and you'll be fine.

Shame about Fusion...

Yup, thanks, I already have GensFE.  Thanks for the suggestion and link, though, Rahzel.  I still haven't had time to try setting GensFE up in Mamewah 1.6.  For that matter, I just got the 1.62 latest beta and haven't even begun to set that up yet.  Hopefully, it won't take too long.

Cheers,

Wait if you can...I've just released a new one which changes some stuff yet again *ducks*  ::)
