Title: a classic puzzle
Post by: duffjr on August 27, 2005, 05:47:00 am
http://www.borrett.id.au/computing/petals-j.htm

spent about an hour on it but no hope.  if i setup a better system, i can get it.  they say if you oversimplify every problem, this will be perfect for you.  most of the people solve it in a few seconds, and some take a few minutes to days.

I figured that puppy out!  The rules of the game state that I'm not allowed to tell you, but I will give you a couple of hints (I'm going to be banned from that geek society or whatever):

1) Ignore the dice colors
2) Think about "why" the game is called "Petals on the Rose".

I've already told you too much.  Good luck.

yes i thought of everything.  i honestly don't see any rose there.  i feel the longer i look at it, the crazier i'll become.  the best thing i can do is admit defeat.

I've managed to work it out. 8)

I'll give you another fairly big clue. The solution is not mathematical.....

i was rolling for a bit but then hit a losing streak.  how can it be more than 6 unless it's mathematical without putting two numbers together?  sometimes it's 8, 10, 12, 14.

I'm SO not showing off....honestly.  I just see your troubles with this, and wish I could see your face after seeing this picture of mine.  Why did I stop there?  I just thought 30 would have been showing off ;D ;)

Clever took me a while to figure out.

are you saying you got it on the first roll?

Well I suppose the solution could be expressed in mathematical terms but then you'd be making your life unnecessarily complicated.

Another hint - think visual.

If you get really desperate I'll PM you the solution.

Boys, get your shunning clothes on.  We're about to have to shun the snot outta Grasshopper.  Wait'll I tell BG about this!  I can see it now....Windows Vista is five bucks for everyone EXCEPT Grasshopper ;)

i got 55 3 2 5 and the answer is 14...how can i visualize 14 without doing 5+5-3+2+5.  and whenever i see a 1 the answer is 0 half the time.  i am going over to my friend's house to verify that this is not a conspiracy.

ok i just figured it out after seeing 8 on consecutive rolls.  i never would have got that if 2 8s didn't come up.

I still don't get it.  What does the name of the game have to do with anything?

Someone PM me the solution.  It'll probably be like a slap in the face it's so obvious, but I'm stumped.

you have to find out what each roll represents...figure out what the petals are and what the rose is.  the order doesn't matter...just what each roll is.

You mean there are still some people who pay for Windows?  ;)

That took 20 minutes.  Not really a brain teaser, it's a 'guess till you figure out what idiotic rule this guy stuck in there'.  I was more impressed with the card trick that always knew what card I was thinking. That was cool even after I figured it out.

My score was 36 guesses, 19 correct, best run of 7.

Once you get it figured out, this puzzle is gay beyond belief.  I think the reason I spent the time I did on it was just to figure it out.  Figuring out how to solder....now THERE'S something that is impressive.  This thing....meh.....it's just a "do you think outside the norm, inside the norm, or at all" kind of thing.  It REALLY is nothing special, and as Zakk said, after you get it figured out....

who started all this?  I want compensation for the time I wasted on this thing that I'll never get back.

Now that I see it's duff, I no longer have any sympathy for you.  Your penance is having to figure this out, and since you're STILL not getting it, my time wasted is paid back to me by me being able to say "NENER NENER BOO BOO!  I GOT IT AND YOU AIN'T GOT IT, SUCKA!" ;)

/me walks away trying to act nonchalant (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=13118.0;id=14035;image)

Okay more hints... SKIP THIS POST IF YOU DON'T WANT ANY HELP...

1) Don't think of the dice as numbers!
2) 2/3 of the dice don't contribute to the score.
3) Draw a picture of a flower - concentrate of the main parts of the face.
4) Pay close attention when the correct score is a 0, 10, or 20.
5) Outside the tallying of scores, there is no math.
6) Once again - name of game is BIG hint.

I like this "frustrate 'em more" approach ;D  I can see the responses now:

1) Well, if they're not NUMBERS, why use dice?
2) If you're keeping score, numbers HAVE to play into it.  And 2/3?  FTW?
3) If I could draw a picture of a flower, I wouldn't be so good at math.  A flower has a face?
4) Again with the "score".  Dude, you're messing with me, it's GOTTA be about math and counting.
5) Liar.  I can tell because your pants are ablaze.
6) Dude, if that helped me the FIRST time, I wouldn't still be trying to figure it out!  This sucks, and you all are big fat liars who figured out the mathematical equation or algorithm this thing uses and I hate you all.  Die, die, die.  Big flaming deaths.  Your level of suckitude is beyond comprehension.  I can't believe none of you wil.......hey, I GOT IT!

no i figured it out when 2 dumbass rolls that weren't that similar came up with the same answer.  obviously most of the dice were worthless and i wasted my time looking at all of them.

"FTW"?  WTF?!

Well.. FTW is actually an acronym.. For The Win..

Think he typoed tho

Oh you mean like, "I'll take Jm J. Bullock FTW."?  ;D

And congrats duffjr on figuring it out.  Thoroughly anti-climactic, wasn't it?

yea it was.  i probably wouldn't have got it ever without looking at the dice forever.  i initially thought the position of the dots meant something, but i had no idea so i started thinking about the math.

No, quite purposeful.  As in - he's running around in circles trying to figure it out, he'll be speaking backwards soon.

But now that I 'splained it....
