Title: Grrrr. Someone Keyed my Car!!!
Post by: Jabba on August 26, 2005, 05:18:47 pm
Went out to my car this afternoon and noticed someone keyed me! Grrr. What kinda idiot would do that? I always take great care to park away from everyone else....

Looks to be just a white scratch (clearcoat scratch). Did not dig into the metal. Anyone know of any product that I could use to rub this out?

Thanks Guys.

Depends how deep it is... does the paint have damage or just the clearcoat?

From what I can see, it looks like just the clear coat.... I rubbed my thumbnaiol over it and can't really feel anything.

Maybe a few coats of a caranuba wax... not sure, I bet there is something more specifically for this type of thing.  Maybe an acrylic hardening polish or something.

Auto body rubbing compound.  Go to a car dealership and see what the bodyshop uses to buff out light scratches.  A little elbow grease should take care of the rest!

Pay someone who owns an electric buffer to buff it out for you. I'd never try to buff out a scratch by hand, but then I'm a lazy daisy. ;) Hell, I own an electric buffer and I still don't like to do it.

In any case, if it's really just in the clearcoat (a lot of people really can't seem to tell if it is or not) then it will buff out fine. Seriously, a pro will do a much better job than you will. If you try to buff it out by hand, you'll almost surely be able to see a ghost scratch where it was. A pro will make it go away completely.

Thanks guys,

Think I will take the advice and see what an auto body would use and see if I can get it out. I just got a quote from the dealer and they want to "repaint!!!!!" Quoted me $500.

Yeah, find another shop.

Do you think it was random, or they keyed YOUR car?

Hmmm, never thought someone would be deranged enough to randomly key a car...You think there are people out there who do this?

I park in a office parking lot in the burbs. I'd hate to think there is some deranged weirdo who get kicks out of keing cars... ;)

The reason I'm looking to get it fixed is I'm thinking of selling it. It is 1.5 years old. You think it would make a big difference if I fixed the scratch or leave it as is?

what's the "daisy" word?  Hey, it auto censored it even when I tried to modify it!  This is getting to be like "stump the quizmaster" or something!

Yeah, people nowadays ARE that stupid, Jabba.  Someone busted the mirror on my truck when I went into the supermarket here.  It was late enough that there were less than 2 dozen cars.  I was parked at LEAST 5 spots away from anyone.  I walked in, went STRAIGHT to the soda aisle, picked up a 12 pack, went through the express line, walked out.  Mirror bent in and broken.  STILL no other car near me, and not enough time for me to miss someone coming in.

Think about it.  JACKASS was made into a movie, and you're asking if people would key a car for shits and grins.

A guy at my work had a small scratch and he went to an auto body shop and asked the guy to buff it out for him and the guy did it on the spot for $10. Looked great. Just offer $10 cash and see what happens.
Good luck.

Oh, if you want to try a cheap solution, Meguiars (dunno if that's spelled right, but there's enough letters for you to guess the correct product ;) ) makes something called Scratch-X in a black tube that you should be able to find at any AutoZone or similar auto parts store.

I use the stuff on the LCD display on my cell phone every so often to kinda hide the scratches.  That should at least tell you if it's easily fixable, and if not, it's only a few bucks, plus it smells real purdy too :P

p.s. Wal-Mart carries the stuff too

i can vouch for scratch-x , if its just clearcoat it will work awesome. on my black eclipse i had some small scratches and paint fades and it made it look nearly new, plus this was on a 10 year old car

I just heard from Dave Foley.  He was giggling with a false sense of power and admitted that he keyed your car because he knew you were illegally using Mame.  He told me to tell you "your bacon is next if you don't stop".   So there's your answer.

The sad truth of it is that people do not respect other peoples property anymore. There is very little respect for each other in this day and age.

That's true.  Now shut up, get me a beer and clean my porch.
