Title: Need help with parts for driving games
Post by: KungFuJoe on August 26, 2005, 04:42:12 am
I'm looking for parts to buy to be able to play games from Super Sprint, to OutRun to APB, to Spy Hunter.

I know what I need, but I need help knowing where to get it (without breaking my bank):

- 360 wheel (already have 2 coming in the mail)
- 270 wheel (checked Happs but they are prohibitively expensive)
- Flight yoke (I'm assuming this is what would be used for Spy Hunter...if anyone has tried any other type of control with satisfying results, please let me know)
- up/down shifter (I think only the newer games (which Mame probably won't play) use an increasing/decreasing shifter...most of the classics were hi/lo games so I think an up/down shifter will suffice.
- 2 pedal (gas/brake) analog device (I'm going analog because I read that they will work fine for digital but not quite vice versa).

I have one side question...for the old Sega 270 driving games...did they use some kind of "force feedback" wheel...i seem to recall the wheel rumbling in Out Run whenever you crashed...or am I imagining things?

I really hope there's a one stop solution for all of the above...if I didn't care about money, I'd get everything from Happs.  Now, if it comes down to spending 150 bucks at Happs for quality and arcade authenticity or 75 to 100 bucks for something that is just "eh", I'll more than likely kick in the extra money.  But if anyone can point me in the direction of something that offers realism and is more economical, I'm all ears.

yes some games had force feedback
but Mame does not support force feedback.

I have been getting my parts from eBay and buying a sprint 2  cab,
microsoft sidewinder steering wheel works well also.

the Playstation adaptors for gamepads work also on playstation steering wheels if you can get them cheaper
not much help here.

i am still in the collecting parts stages on my driving cab.
I have a  sprint 2 cab and a drafting table i am going to make a HUGE Frankin CP out of for it. doubt I will show it here.. Bound to be the most butt ugly thing around. Have a bunch of spare parts, Might as well have fun with it  ;)

I've got just about all the controls you mention...all from ebay for decent prices.

Also, there is an emulator which can do force feedback for OurRun: http://www.geocities.com/finalburnff/

Spy hunter is, AFAIK a 270 wheel with 4 buttons (well, 2 triggers and 2 buttons).

You could play it on a yoke but that's not exactly what it had.

I thought of looking at ebay...but being a newbie to all of this, I was afraid to go buying stuff and then end up with a bunch of parts that I couldn't use.  But I'll keep looking.

Should I bother looking for a steering wheel that supports force feedback?  Does final burn work in conjuntion with MAME or is it a stand alone emulator?

Also, I do have a Logitech Driving Force Pro that works on a PS2 and PC...is that something that would work with MAME?

You're exactly right...after I posted this topic...I did some more searching on the boards...and discovered that you probably wouldn't want to use a yoke.

Final Burn FF is a seperate emulator.  It doesn't support many feedback games so it might not be worth it...depends how much you like OutRun.

Final Burn FF - emulates the sitdown simulator version of outrun..

The sitdown used a motor and worm drive to Tilt the entire cabnet left to right.
(wheel did not shake)

However, the standup version used a completely different force feedback.
Instead, it used a single-direction motor that drove a piston arm - which moved the steering wheel platform back and forth very rapidly and violently.

Final Burn FF - works 'ok' with typical PC force feedback wheels.   But its nowhere near the same as a true shaker motor would feel like.   Its weak, slow, and tame comparitively.    Its also not correct emulation.. because its using the wrong feedback system.

Hopefully someday someone will emulate the standup version as well.. so we can make our own shaker motor based feedback wheels.

Most of the commercial arcade driving game controls _ARE_ manufactured by Happ Controls. In most cases they are the source so you've got to pay the price.
