First let me say I've built 8 arcade machines.

Wow, that's pretty cool. I guess you play guitar? One thing that I am incorporating into my arcade cabinet (SLOWLY under construction) is a pair of DIY speaker enclousures. I'm totally new to the speaker design thing, but I was reading through some web sites on home speaker construction, and a lot of people were building different size/shape boxes out of MDF. I figured since I was pretty much doing the same thing for the arcade, why not include a few more pieces of MDF and try to make home HI-FI speakers as part of the arcade machine. I chose some full range 6" Fostex Drivers, and using a free speaker design program called WinISD, I came up with a bass reflex type speaker box of such a volume/port tuning that would extend the bass response of the drivers. I have no idea if it will all work out, or sound good, but I figured what the hell. I know it's silly to have hi-fi speakers in an arcade game, but my design is going to use a projector instead of a monitor, so I could also use it to show movies, and as a jukebox of course, so having some fancy speakers will be nice if I'm able to build the whole thing properly.

Sounds cool to me. Post some pics of you speaker boxes when you've finished.

Dude, that custom Cubase controller is awesome. I'm a composer by trade so you've just inspired me to building my own.
-
Wintermute, you should check out the "scratch built centipide cabinet" that's been posted here earlier. The cab has custom built in enclosures that are pretty cool!

Wow, cool, that's a great project. If I can do half as well I'll be happy. Here's my design in cad, the back view shows the inside of the speaker boxes and the place for the computer (it will have a door attached of course), and the shelf for the projector.

CMRick, glad I could give you a new project.
;)

Right on, I have a projector also, Sony VLP HS 10, a little dated today but still has a awesome picture. Will this unit just be a dedicated arcade machine? Sorry to pull away from your thread PathDoc, your desk looks tight !

Well I was hoping to be able to use it to show movies too, although I don't exactly know where I could put it in my house so you could stand at it, OR sit somewhere nearby and watch the screen without the cabinet being in the way. Hopefully I'll get some of it together soon so I can post some real pics (not just CAD).

Project is complete and has been installed in the studio.

Wow, that looks really sweet. I would never have thought to apply the arcade game technology we use to something serious like a recording console, but it's a great idea, and looks totally professional in that environment. But do you think you'll be tempted to bust into a quick game of centipede while you're waiting for someone to get the drum kit set up or something? ;)

Wow Centipede across 3 screen, now that would be something.
Thanks for you kind words.
With 3 screens a trackball is really necessary.

Better pics.

Here is an update of a rack that I made earlier but added nice flame maple trim. Its also been painted in silver Hammerite.
Also notice new VU panel I built to match. I got the VU meters used off EBay. There are made by Dixson.

I recently went to the St. Louis Science Center and they have Happ joysticks, trackballs, and arcade buttons all over the place. Almost every interactive exhibit used them.
