If you guys haven't seen this movie you are seriously missing out. It's the best thing I've seen all year! It starts a little bit slow but the second half is mind-blowingly fun. The special effects are amazing and hilarious, I can't say enough good stuff about this one. I'm definitely buying it. Oh yea, the English dubbing is not very good so leave it in Cantonese and turn on the sub-titles.

Yes, this is a good chinese movie... (I'm Chinese...)
if you like socceer... try this one...
Shaolin Socceer... this one is just as funny...
and a little less violent....
Shaolin Soccer is done a few years BEFORE Kung Fu Hustle...
but I like Shaolin Socceer more...
definitely a movie to keep....
-
Both of those movies are great. They're actually by the same director (who is also the main star). I'm a big kung fu fan so I never miss a big one when it comes to the theater.

God of Cookery, baby.... :)
I have yet to see Kung-Fu Hustle, which surprises me because I love Stephen Chow movies. I have Shaolin Soccer on DVD ordered from YesAsia, but I'm not sure where I put it. :'( More than likely I lent it to someone and forgot who...

Yea, Shaolin Soccer is fantastic too. What else has Stephen Chow done?
I'm really amazed at the level of mastery Chinese special effects houses have achieved. The CG in both Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer is better than anything I've seen come out of Hollywood since Jurassic Park.

Shaolin Socceer...

Best scene in the whole movie: here kitty, kitty, kitty... ;D

I took you guys advice and rented this movie and I am bit confused why you guys liked it. I just didn't care for it.

Don't rent Sin City then, it might bother you too.

I enjoyed shaolin soccer, but didn't like Kung Fu Hustle much, it just wasn't near as good IMO.

I'm glad this thread was bumped back up. I watched it the first time this thread came around, but didn't post.
I really liked the movie very much. I'll have to check out Shaolin Soccer now.

Great film. Shaolin Soccer I heard is good. House of flying daggers is the tops however.
-
house of flying daggers is very badass, it has a lot of focus on the love story but i found it enjoyable. Also Hero is badass of course

It's funny this thread got bumped up.
I just watched Kung Fu Hustle for the first time while I was at work last night. I really really enjoyed it. I'm going to have to check out Shaolin Soccer as well.
-
Ok then.....I"ll check out Shaolin Soccer and the house of the flying daggers too, and will check back with my results. I thought the fight scenes in KFH were spectacular, even better than movies like the matrix series, etc. I think listening to the movie with english words probably changes it a little bit too.

I thought House of Flying Daggers was only OK in comparison to Hero which is a cinematic beauty.
I found a movie which has elements of all of the movies mentioned here (except no CG): The White Dragon
It's part historical drama, part chinese "superhero" with some excellent fighting, and part romantic comedy too. It takes place in ancient china, but it's full of anachronistic elements like "McDonald's chinese buns", roller blading, bamboo wheelchairs, etc. Very funny with excellent fight choreography, and Cecelia Cheung is a cutie!

Cool - some more Kung Fu movies to check out. We should keep posting to this thread for more suggestions for everyone to check out...

Great film. Shaolin Soccer I heard is good. House of flying daggers is the tops however.
That's comparing apples to oranges. One is an action/ love story, one is a comedy.
I haven't seen all of Kung Fu Hustle yet :(
Shaolin Soccer, I was glad to see on the US DVD they included the Chinese cut of the movie as that is the first version I saw.
God of Cookery, hilarious.
Any Stephen Chow movie = funny.
Stephen Chow and Jackie Chan should get together for a movie.
I like talking to people who criticize Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger for using rope tricks so the fighting doesn't look realistic. Duh, that's the point. It's Chinese story telling. That's like saying you don't want to watch Star Trek because warp drives are unrealistic.
A good fighting Kung Fu movie is Shaolin Vs Manchu. Old but lots of action.

Walgreen's sells new DVDs for 1.99 they are usually old movies/tv shows and they are sold in paper sleeves. Every month or so they come out with a new theme for these movies. They are currently in a Kung Fu theme.
-
I loved house of flying daggers but was anybody else on the forum expecting a huge final fight scene between the house and the government troops? You see them advancing on the house but NOTHING.
Crouching tiger is still my favourite. Hero was amazing too.
-
Yes, there were alot of unanswered questions in flying daggers.
Like where did that dude run off to after the chick died.
What's up with the sudden season change, that represent they were fighting that long?
How come they didn't die after repeating stabbing each other but soldiers in earlier fight scenes die at a mere flesh wound :)
Why are the subtitles fairly different than the english voice overs? Like ther is one spot where she says throwing daggers but the subtitles say something like pouch.

They're the chinese equivalent of "superheros".
