What is the best way to set up a MAME spinner? I'm need something cheap. Any suggestions welcome
-
Make one yourself or get one from Mamespinner.com... those are the cheapest options out there.

check my page on the BYO gadget or search of the Nasty-Spinner.

Isn't there a company that makes a USB spinner?

There are a few that do. Slikstik's tornado is USB. Oscar's can be used with USB, and mamespinner.com (when it existed apparently lol) had a cheaper USB spinner. There are also some others I believe.

Thats the page that used to be mamespinner.com
Yes, it's USB, Yes it's probably the cheapest spinner you can buy. So buy it and let us know how it works! ;)

I have one. It's ok. It gets the job done, but it's not the best spinner in the world. I'd say it's worth the money, but if you are really into spinner games, you're going to want something else.

Has you or anyone else tried to attach the 7" steering wheel on the spinner and use it for games like Super Sprint? I think it would be a cool way to not have to make multiple (or modular) cps by allowing you to interchange spinners with the steering wheels...and they're cheap as hell, too. I know they're small, but if they're even "decent", it just might be worth it.

I'm going for economy, so this looks like the best choice. I'm only really gonna use it for arkanoid, tempest, and racing games
-
I bit the bullet and bought two of the mame spinners and 2 of the steering wheel attachments. Guess I'll let everyone know how they work out for me.

OzStick sell a spinner for $35 Australian (not USB though).

I need a USB or serial one, as both my PS/2's are taken by the Keywiz and Trackball
-
Ozstick also has them in serial and ps2 port

I'm very interested in how they work. I even emailed them about doing a Retroblast Review (after talking to Kevin). Still waiting on that one. Guess they're not biting.
Post opinions on the product, especially the steering wheel attachment, when you get them playtested, please.

I bought a spinner and steering wheel from them a while ago and here are my thoughts on them:
Spinner:
It's ok, but it's not great. I like that it is ready to plug into the computer and works right out of the box, but they don't use a bearing on this spinner (they just cut a hole in the plastic case a tiny bit bigger than the shaft and that is what makes it spin). I ended up using the mouse guts and encoder wheel out of this spinner to get a hard drive spinner working (I'm much happier with that home made spinner).
Honestly, if I didn't have the other spinner to compare it to (the hard drive spinner), then I probably would have stayed happy with the ezarcadesolutions one. It doesn't keep spinning after you give it a good twist, but for the most part, it is acceptable in games like arkanoid, definately not for people with fond memories of real arcade spinners.
Steering Wheel:
I know they list on the site that it's only 7", but I was still suprised to see how small the wheel was when I opened the package (it looks a lot bigger in the pic on their site). Even though it seems small, that was a great purchase. It fits right onto the spinner shaft and tightens down with an very small allen wrench (I guess that is probably my biggest beef with it, the knob uses a small screw, so I have to keep both a small screw driver and a small allen wrench around to change it, small complaint I guess).
The wheel is really light plastic, but it feels sturdy enough for what I use it for. I know others have shown concern about bending the shaft with the extra leverage that the wheel provides, but I don't see that being a problem (I'm sure the wheel would break before that happened, don't know if that is a good thing).
It's a lot of fun with the Ironman Ivan Stewarts Off Road (I think that was the name of it, I kept looking in the "O's" for "Off Road" and then discovered it was in the "I's" for "Ironman Off Road" or something like that).
I think the wheel is worth the purchase, although I'm sure it could be found elsewhere for cheaper (maybe not the same exact wheel, but something that works just as well). I won't be buying anymore spinners from them, but I'm tempted to get another steering wheel for my brother in laws cab.

How is the Ozstick spinner in comparison to the ezarcadesolutions spinner?
-
stew_bidasso,
Great info. Also, is the spinner shaft 1/4 inch? Do you think it would be easy to put the steering wheel on any old spinner (I believe 1/4 inch is the standard)?
Ironman and Super Sprint are exactly the reasons why I'm considering getting two or three of these. I like small, since I'm hoping they could fit on my bartop. ;D

KenToad,
Yes, the shaft is 1/4 inch. It's really not that bad for the price, especially when you consider that it's ready to plug in out of the box, but like I said, if you are expecting it to act just like a real arcade spinner, you're in for a rude awakening.
The thing that bugs about these spinners the most is it would only take a little bit extra to make them a ton better (adding a cheap bearing etc...). The little plastic case is nice and all the other parts fit well and work as they should, it just doesn't spin great (just ok).
