Looks like I won't be gaming in the next generation for a while. That is definitely too rich for my blood. :(

Unless Microsoft or Nintendo come up with a few exclusives that I just can't live without, my next console will be a PS3. I've been more than pleased with my decision to buy a PSx followed by a PS2. However if the PS3 is similarly priced, I'll probably have to wait for a price break.

At that price, my next platform will be an early '80s SS pin.  Something actually WORTH that much money.

Yes, exactly. I have a hard time shelling out the kind of money for a console that could easily buy a pin or a nice cocktail. It's not that a $400 gaming purchase is out of the question, it's just that I'm pretty limited to how many times a year I can justifiably spend that kind of money on one item. When I do so, I want to make sure it's something that I really want and will stay in my collection for some time to come.

And won't require regular additional purchases ranging from $30 to $120.

Yep

I love my console gaming, but the prices for next gen are just ridiculous.

Especially if the next gen is as short as this one was.

Fortunately I have a ton of great current gen games that are still in my backlog, so waiting for some prices drops should come easily.

So let me get this straight... people are always holding their nuts, chomping on a bullet, dying pleading crying for the next gen of systems to come out...

...and then they want to say the current gen was too short?

OMG NO NOT 400$$$$

Pffft..

Last gen was the same Fing way.. my PS2 at launch costed me 370$..

$400 system

$40 memory card

$100 for 2 extra controlelrs

$60 per game

$30 s-video cable

+1 one additional kid since last console launch

= I will be waiting.

Some people can toss out the $$$ on a whim. Lucky you. Not everyone can, and the price of this launch is indeed a high one compared to any system last gen.

One of my biggest gripes though, is that they are releasing a version of the system without a HDD. I guess the only reason to have a HDD this gen is for custom soundtracks, because with a split user base developers aren't gonna waste any time developing games that really utilize it. :(

People who can toss out money like that on a whim can do so because they rarely DO toss out money like that on a whim.

you got robbed then.  Why'd you pay over list during the launch??  And plus that is just the system... like people are saying, by the time you grab an extra controller and a game or two, or any other accessories... you're looking at a $500-600 hit to the wallet on the first day.

I'll wait.

But why can't we have socialized gaming, a tax on the people who can afford it so that the lower income folks are able to play new games?

SNES games used to start at 50 and go up from there.  I bought Crono Trigger for 79.99 when if first came out.  I've been happy that games are now lower.  Too bad they are coming back up.  Different reasons ROM cost vs develpment cost.
Anyway, I was hoping for a 299 full system.  399 is a bit much for me now with the kids and all.  Maybe I'll change my tune when Halo 3 comes out :).

I'm going with the $399.99 Xbox 360.  The only reason I can afford it is because I've been saving up money for over half a year.

Now I just need to know the day it comes out and the launch titles.

I recall buying Final Fantasy 3 at launch for 79.99 and also Street Fighter 2 for the same price.

Those were simpler times.  ;)

I suppose you could just ditch gaming all together..

Remember, im the guy that will throw 400-500 bucks on a video card once a year.. hell i JUST bought my video card for 400 like oh i dunno 3 months ago.. and guess what, upgrading again with another 500$ card..

Money means nothing.. if you WANT something bad enough, you can afford it.. theres always SOMETHING you can skimp on and get what you want..

But again, im a gamer, to the bone and always have been..

Well....and I'm just gonna throw this out there, but..........can't I just wait for the price to come down a bit?  I mean, I like videogames.  And I don't want to die.  I'm still not happy with my choices.

I have been skimping and putting back a little here and there for a while now (the kids don't really need new school clothes...they've hardly grown anyway since I cut them back to one meal a day ;D )

But after reading this thread (and all your very profound and moving posts)...and seeing that the $299 model isn't even backward compatible, I've had a change of heart.

I'm a PS2 owner and have put off buying an XBOX or Camecube until the "nextgen" arrived. Well it has...almost.

I think I'll celebrate the launch with the purchase of an XBOX...and a Gamecube...and a DS. I'll still save money and the system specific titles that interest me will keep me happy for a good year...

Great thread and thanks shmokes...the Joneses comment may have just saved me a few hundred dollars.

SOAPboy, if you feel the need to throw away your "outdated" stuff...look me up...I think I'm local.  ;D

I'd rather have a good color vector monitor.  The cost is about the same.

i just noticed, THEY DONT EVEN INCLUDE A BLOODY RGB SCART CABLE!!

wtf! why are the next generation consoles going to include a couple of generations old cables?
Title: Re: Xbox360 Official Pricing: System & Accessories

Because you'll pay $30 more for a SCART cable.  Duh.

I will NEVER be "hardcore" enough to drop 2 g's on a console gaming bundle.... NEVER EVER.

I'm not even hardcore enough for that $700 pack   ::)
Title: Re: Xbox360 Official Pricing: System & Accessories

The most I've ever dropped on console stuff at once was $650 on Atari 2600 games... but that was 275 unique titles, some of them very low production releases.
