I cannot put this thing down or stop gushing about it..
i just got my hands on a 1.5 and loaded it up with all my favorite emus.
i have been playing everything form PC engine to genesis to neo geo all handheld and i am in heaven.
Playing Vectorman and Earthworm jim on this psp is awesome. those games are as fresh and entertaining as the day they were released.
I didnt know what i missing with this unit. Its truly an all in one wonder machine.
I dont know why these thngs arent selling more, they are the greatest thing to happen to gaming since the NES.

It's probably because even though there are tech-saavy people out there, the majority are still in the dark about all the prgress made with the unit, and the official list of PSP games is still sorta lacking... Give the developers time to release some solid PSP games, and perhaps a small price reduction, and you'll see people flock to it.
I love mine, but I'm holding out on buying a memory card until I can find a cheap 2GB card... Do they even make 2GB Memorystick Pro Duos yet?

Oh. Just answered my own question, click HERE (http://www.dynamism.com/msx-m2gs/pricing.shtml).
Still quite pricy though. :( I'd buy one if it was about $150US.
Maybe I'm better off just getting a 512meg for now, in the end...

I dont know why these thngs arent selling more, they are the greatest thing to happen to gaming since the NES.
Because it is $250!
I think it is pretty dang cool too, but I'd rather get a home console for that price :)

it has the graphics of a present day home console and its portable.
but i do understand the financial barriers. i traded in a small fortune in old games and my Gambecube. i couldnt have paid 250 up front.
but just the sheer number of games one can play on this thing.
forget the psp umd lineup. its bare..the emus are where its at.
i do however really like the import cel shaded fighter BLEACH.
kick ass graphics, looks like DBZ budokai and has the control scheme of battle arena toshinden.
-
No doubt that they are super cool, but as previously mentioned, they are also super expensive. There's going to have to be a serious price cut before I'll buy one.
-S
-
Yeah, it needs a reduction in price to the tune of $150. For a handheld system $150 is the early-adopter price. Mass market doesn't come until it hits $99. It's mostly hardcores who own a DS right now. $250 isn't close to a reasonable expectation for Sony.
I'll echo that the device is damned cool. But...
P.S. It's the "but" that's important, cos that's how everybody feels. It's not that people don't want one.
-
Exactly,.
In a year and a half I will probably get when when they are old, outdated, and cheap :)
I'm thinking about picking up a GBA because now that the SP has been out so long the original is very cheap.
-
Do they even still sell the GBA at retail? Some things aren't worth picking up used, and an older handheld is definitely one of them. They get too much abuse.
-
really when you think about what your getting its not that pricey.
there are units out there i see on gizmodo and kotaku that are only good for playing movies and they go for comparable price if not 2 3 hundred more.
When you actually see the high def screen on this thing you really appreciate the quality of it.
It really is more than just another portable.
-
Yeah, that's what I need, a handheld high def screen. Then I can get my bionic corneal implants so I'll be able to see the difference.
The average gamer wants to play games, not do 600 other things, so when the cost comes down to what they will pay to play games, that is when the average gamer will buy it.
-

thats like saying why get a D9200 for a cab. If you want to play games like naomi or other hires hardware you need the monitor. same with the psp and its umd games.
games like bleach look like you could reach your hand into the monitor. even star soldier ,though medium res looks fantastic.
-
Here in Australia the PSP is debuting at AU$399 RRP (US$307).
US$250 would be a dream. God I hate the stupid prices they charge for technology here. Grrr...
-
I don't understand why they don't toss the "value pack" idea and just sell the naked PSP for $199. I'd think it'd make a difference in sales.
-pmc
-
I thought the value pack was $300 and the unit was $250? ???
-

Naw. The value pack has been at $250 since release and the unit alone is not available (in the US anyway).
It's $229 at Amazon.com right now (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0007TFLLC/qid=1124248221/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-6676508-0751834?v=glance&s=pc&n=507846).

Ugh....don't do it. The screen looks awful in almost any light. Just keep waiting until the SP comes out, or at least find a modded one with the afterburner kit on ebay or something. Hell, I've got a regular GBA I'll sell ya for $30 and $5 shipping. No idea what they're going for on Ebay, but I know I never play the thing.

last time i checked the PSP was slower than all the home consoles out currently..
Its pretty, but not THAT pretty.. >:E

My wife bought me the PSP and a few games for Fathers Day. I had been messing with it a couple times a week, but putting a 1gig card and emulators on there definitely brought it to life. I play it every day now.
MAME was a bit of a disappointment. It has limited game support, and runs a lot of the stuff it is capable of running too slow. SNES emulator is better, but even at 333mhz it runs some of the more advanced games like Contra 3 a bit slow.
The Genesis and NES emulators are where I think the PSP shines. The Genesis games look great on the small PSP screen, play is fluid and most games run flawlessly at 333mhz. Found a few that don't work, including Gaires, which is my favorite Genesis shooter.
All the NES games I tried worked. I have about 50 of them on there now. Some of the arcade ports for the NES have aged well. The NES version of Gyruss is pretty cool, since it's true to the original play mechanic but adds some bosses to fight between levels and stuff. Donkey Kong Classics is also very sweet, though it has the Japanese level layout (elevators are second screen).
-
you can use the williams classics on the sega genesis to play alot of classic mame titles..very authentic.
-
ive just discovered the painfull side to PSP addiction
Today i had to make an appointemt with my GF's chiropractor becuase i cant turn my head left or down..ive got a pinched nerve or something :(
I think i have spent a little too much time playing my PSP...

If there were a divx player for the SP I would go out and buy one today.

The software that comes with the Movie Player converts Divx (anything your pc has a codec for) to the .gba movie files... It is a sloooooow process to convert though, but i do enjoy watching them while waiting in line or on a flight or at lunch :D
-
Hrm... worth looking into. I download a lot of stuff in DivX. I assume you then put it on a flash cart?
-
Yepper - the movie player cart holds a CF card (i have a gig and it can hold a couple of movies). I also use it to listen to MP3's - just put the closed GBA SP in my pocket and use the L & R shoulder buttons to jump forward and backwars.
Here is the movie player site - you can dl the app and test it out on your pc before you buy the hardware:

If you haven't tried it already, Download the .4 version of PSPQuake.

No sound yet. I don't usually stick with silent games for very long. It's a big part of the experience. I hope he works on the sound engine before he tackles WiFi.

i cant wait till team xecuter releases their usbotg hack so we can recognize USB HDD's as memory cards.
-
I download a lot of stuff in DivX.
-
stuff=porn
Actually, stuff = pro wrestling shows they don't broadcast either on DirecTV or in my area. Regional shows and things like that.
Why on Earth would I need that much porn, I only watch it for 6 minutes at a time and then it's not interesting anymore. :)
-
In other words you only last 6 minutes LOL

He's saving himself for marriage.

Variety is the spice of life.
-
A DVD is like two hours long. It takes a long time to consume two hours of material in 6 minute spurts.
In other words you only last 6 minutes LOL
Yes, if there is no one else involved, what is the point of trying to be longer? What, you think you have some imaginary audience? With a partner there are hundreds of things to do. With yourself, get it up, get it done, get on with your life.
-
brings a whole new meaning to the term screen protector
-
Especially since I can play divx files on my phone at full speed. :)
-
Eh, I don't think I need mobile porn. I can't say I find the need to watch 6 minutes of porn while I'm out and about during the day. I can just see you watching porn, holding your sausage hostage, and accidentally speed dialing your mother in law without noticing.
-
Well that'll sure knock the wind out of your sails in a hurry!
-S
-
We hope.
-
Heh....it would be virtually impossible as the keyboard is a slider, not to mention that the phone wouldn't dial without opening the phone app, which would appear on top of the DIVX player (read: porn) letting me know it was making a call.
It does kick ass for regular movies, though. I can compress a full-length DVD into about 300 MB and it looks great on any screen 4" or smaller. On my recent road trip to California we had two pocket pc's and my phone (which has a big screen for a phone) and had eight 1 GB SD cards. So we had more than 20 full length movies to choose from and enough players for everyone but the driver. Pretty cool. Also, if you already have a collection of ripped DVDs (which I do) you can change the resolution and shrink existing Divx movies really quickly. It only takes about 15 or 20 minutes to take a 1.5 GB DIVX and make a 300 MB version of it.
-
That's a LOT of money in hardware and software to watch Police Academy 4.
-
Oh, don't worry. It's mostly taxpayer money. You don't think I paid for all that do you??
-
If you get a new PSP, isn't the firmware updated to not allow mods on it?
Or can I get ANY PSP and put emus on them?
plus don't some games force you to update the firmware?
or am I way off base here?
cause I kinda want one....
-
No firmware disallows mods. That is what mods are.
It may close some specific holes, but mods will still happen.
-
you dont want a 2.0
theres rumors of a downgrader, but alls there is...rumors.
you want a 1.5 psp.they have an A or nothing under the barcode on the side of the box.
if you go to pspupdates.com they have a thread describing what to look for when trying to find a 1.5.
basically go to the poorest most rundown town in your area where sales would be low, there most likely to still have 1.5's on shelf.
-
Then, when you buy it, sprint back to your car before the poor people beat you up and take it.
-
Id only get one when they put out more colors or someting.... all of them look the same.. >.< i hate having things that are generic... :P

Damn that mass production.

Purse is fixable, I bet its the eye shadow that doesn't match, or the lipstick.

They're wrong. There is a 1.51 and 1.52, neither of which can run the hacks.

A PSP, case, and decent size MS is gonna be closing in on 350 when all is said and done, that's alot for a portable. That being said, I have one and its neat.

theres a white version...
http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3688
maybe only available in japan
looks nice

The white is being referred to as ceramic. Now I haven't seen one yet, but hope that it has a finish that is more fingerprint forgiving than that of the black.
