Title: Dead SF2?
Post by: battletoads on August 15, 2005, 10:20:01 pm
My Street Fighter 2: World Warrior PCB arrived in the mail today off of Ebay, and when I tested it out all I got was a black screen.  As you can imagine, I was pretty pissed.  The seller advertised it as 100% working and even had pics of it running in his machine within the auction so I don't doubt that this PCB should work.

After inspecting the Jamma connector on the PCB, I saw that one of them appears a little burned, and and another one has solder on the front of back of it.  I attached a collage of pics.

What can I do to get this baby running?

BTW, I know that it is a bootleg (not Capcom) board, and I tried cleaning the connector with Isopropyl alcohol with q-tips, no luck there

Does the board need -5v? If so, does your JAMMA harness supply -5v? (not all of them do).

Im not sure if it does.  Heres a pic of my power source and my Jamma harness.  Keep in mind that I didn't install this stuff, I just bought the whole cabinet, so I don't know too much.  I can tell though that if SF2 really does need -5v and I need to run a wire from the power souce to the Jamma cable, Ill need thicker than 22 gauge wire. There appears to be a wire in the -5v plug on the Jamma cable, but im having trouble tracing where it goes.

Anybody know if Street Fighter 2 requires -5v?

I read the manual: http://www.crazykong.com/manuals/SFIIWW.man.pdf

No, it doesn't require -5v after all.

But if the board is a bootleg, it might be different.

Lol well thanks for looking it up for me, man.  Damn, I was hoping that wouldbe the problem....I mean the guy claims it worked perfectly for him, and for me its jsut a black screen, I emailed him and he has no idea what the problem could be.  NOTHING looks loose on the board.

You're not plugging the harness in backward are you?

Umm thers a little plastic piece in the cable connector that fits into the groove in the PCB connector so I cant put it in backwards I think....I have it oriented that same way as my X-men and TMNT pcbs and they work, so I dont think so.

Any sound? Sound means the board is working but something else is wrong.

Is there a light on the board to indicate power?

You could have a short somewhere.

As was suggested, make sure all chips are firmly inserted.

Look for any part that may have broken (little broken leg for example). Look for bent parts touching other parts (causing a short).

Also, it's probably time to get a multimeter and see if there's any power at the harness when its wired to your board. If there is a short, most power supplies like yours will "shut off", therefore giving you readings of 0v. That will at least hint to you to find a short.

If you have power, then you know it's something really wrong with the board. Unless... the power is too low. What's the +5v read? If low, you may need to turn it up slightly, and you might find the board coming to life (doubtful though).
