I know it sounds like a simple request but ive looked for a simple square box with 4 red buttons and a nice joystick (with a ball on top, you know the one) after seeing one hooked up to a laptop running mame and it made galaxians so much better. I didnt get the name though :( .
Has anyone seen any of these on sale (specifically in the United Kingdom) or a name of one so that I could search for it .
Thanks

Do you have any pictures? Or perhaps the name/brand of it?
you say it was running mame... so it makes me think there is a possiblity that he built it?
What was it made out of.. and was there any artwork? (could help deciphering if it was bought or made)

I dont have a name or make. He wasnt an enthusiast just running a competition for highest score so I really doubt he made it himself. It was a rectangular box with a joystick and 2 (maybe 4) buttons. But it was almost definatly a store bought thing.
I would have thought something like this would have been the perfect product for someone like 4gamers to make for the pc.

It has a few more buttons but how about a single x-arcade joystick?

ask if anyone (on the forums) can make you one!!! ??? ???
or you can do one yourself, its pretty easy!!! ;D ;D ;D

and for a single joystick with a few buttons.. probably would be cheap too...
only thing tht would be expensive is the interface... probably would have to do a gamepad hack or something similar...

I found a converted Sega Dreamcast controller here for $42 Euros:

Had to dig through the www.mameworld.net archives to August to find it!!!
Otherwise, perhaps the OzStick Single:

for $99 AUD (approx $50 US), but you then have shipping from australia to the UK.

Heres a review/comparison of the Ozstick and the hotrod from someone in the UK. http://www.btinternet.com/~ardmaddy/joystick/ (http://www.btinternet.com/~ardmaddy/joystick/)
He mentioned in his review that the exchange rate from the UK to Australia was quite attractive and the cost of shipping wasn't bad.
Oz stick makes single player sticks that are more econmically priced (cheaper).

Good review! Couple of comments on the review and both products.
I quoted the cheaper OzStick single player sticks. For the OzStick, the Single uses the gameport and sells for $99 AUD. The super single uses a gamepad USB interface and sells for $149 AUD. The twin uses the game port and sells for $159 AUD. The Ultimate uses the I-PAC (www.ultimarc.com), which is excellent, and sells for $260 AUD.
I could've sworn the HotRod was programmable (though not by software), but from reading their site it doesn't appear to be. That would bother me.
The HotRod uses Happ Super joysticks, the OzStick does not use Happ joysticks. I agree with Chris W's recommendations of the Happ horizontal microswitches, but I don't think the HotRod uses Ultimates. I thought the Ultimate was a vertical switch and the pictures sure look like horizontal switches on the HotRod. Probably just different construction making the buttons sound different, but I couldn't say for sure.
Either one would be a good choice.
